Great price for a durable reel. Similar to President but lighter. Lowest price on camel.

Pflueger President are one of the best bangs for your buck. This Supreme reel is even better and a level above. For $5 more, this is a steal. Now I cannot vouch for saltwater fishing, but if you fish freshwater, this reel will work for all species. It may be a bit big for panfish, but everything else is fair game. IMHO, you won't find a better reel at this price. Pair it with a decent lightweight rod like a St. Croix Triumph or Victory, and you'll be plenty happy. I use the president in a size 30 to haul in everything from walleyes, cats and hybrid stripers, and they perform great. Google best budget reels for freshwater and I'm pretty sure you'll come across Pfluegers in the list. If someone has offshore experience, I'd love to hear it. Hope this helps.

Any lake fishing and shore line / surf fishing would work. 30 series (equivalent to 3000 series for other brands) is an all around spool series. You don't really have to worry about a larger series unless you get off shore. You may have a tougher time with larger inshore species like bull reds, king salmons, sturgeons types, but not impossible. If it matters, I caught a 38" bull red with a smaller spool size (daiwa 2500 ballistic) and had a great time pulling it is. I honestly never had experience fishing with this brand but I heard good reviews with them.

If 30, or 3000 series is an all around spool for lake/shoreline fishing would there be a scenario where it's overkill? What's the disadvantage of using a reel that's too big?

Ice fishing for example, you'd want a smaller reel. Ultralight setup, you'd want a smaller reel. You want to balance your reel weight to your rod weight. The other thing to consider is how many inches 1 revolution of the reel pulls in as well as drag strength. For panfishing, I use a 1000 or 2000. 3000 is a general size as previously mentioned and can really catch anything but probably shines with fish in the 2-15 lb range in my experience.. Larger than that, you should be targeting larger fishing like massive catfish, sturgeon, or offshore species and have a larger reel.

Awesome, I just bought a 3000 Daiwa Black Widow for my father in law at $99. Given it's a baitrunner (he fishes with live bait at lakes and lures on the shoreline) there are slight differences, but for lake and spinner fishing I'm wondering if I made the right choice. I plugged in Google searches for days trying to find the best sub $100 reel and now this Plueger Supreme comes up. Is it really a Slick Deal for this specific usage and price?

So I'm guessing 30 would be overkill for lake and alpine lake trout? Thanks for the replies.
I don't think so. Lake trout can get pretty darned big. Then again, I'm no expert. I have a size 30 Lew's spinning reel on my 42" Laker ice rod, mostly in case I have to jig deep underneath great lakes ice this winter. Hoping I get that chance.

I won't call it overkill. Bigger wheels are heavier, it may sacrifice some sensitivity and put more stress on your arm.

The highest test suggested is 160/10 braid, 130/8 mono. Tempting, but a little too light for me.

I use 20 lb braid on 30 series reels without any issue whatsoever. Those ratings are really just to tell you how much line the reel will use. Obviously putting something like 50 lb test on it probably isn't advisable, especially since the drag won't be able to tighten down enough for that amount of weight. Typically the rod is more important than the reel when it comes to line weight as you'll quickly break a lighter rod with heavy line if you are actually stressing the line to the max.
