In my hunt for a good mid-range Chromebook this holiday season, I was perusing the Costco mailers. I saw the Lenovo Flex 5i (i3, 8G/128G) I posted a week ago as a $399.97 (reg price $549.99) YMWV instore will drop to $349.99 ("reg" price drops to $499.99) on November 22 on Costco.com. I'll think about either getting a price adjustment or returning it outright. The recent Lenovo hinge issue scares me - plus my first unit died after two days (easy swap at my local Costco) and my customer service experience with Lenovo on a couple other things this week has been really bad. The 5i is pretty sleek though.

This HP caught my eye.

In Costco's 'Online Savings' only @ Costco.com beginning November 23rd:

HP Chromebook 14:
- 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-1135G7 Processor
- 8GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM
- 256GB PCle® NVMe™ M.2 Solid State Drive
- Intel® Wi-Fi 6 (2x2/160) Gig+ and Bluetooth® 5.0
- Integrated HP Wide Vision 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter
- Integrated Dual Array Digital Microphones
- 14" Touchscreen IPS Micro-Edge Anti-Glare FHD (1920 x 1080) 250-Nits Display
- Integrated Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics
- Full-size backlit keyboard
- Imagepad with multi-touch gesture support
- Fingerprint Reader
- Audio by B&O with Dual Speakers
- 2x SuperSpeed USB Type-C (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.2)
- 2x SuperSpeed USB Type-A (HP Sleep and Charge)
- 1x Headphone/Microphone Combination Jack
- 1x HDMI 1.4b
- 1x Micro SD Media Card Reader
- 3-Cell 58Wh Li-ion Polymer Battery

Seems to be a nice combination for the price.

But I'd like to get the community's feedback on this deal from a mid range Chromebook perspective. The HP Chromebook 14 ($449) or the Lenovo Flex 5i ($349) in the ~$400 range? Anything better you've seen with a i3 or i5, 8GB+ with IPS touch and 128+ GB SSD? Thank you in advance.

Can't wait to read the entertaining Windows hate sure to follow.

Thanks. I was thinking of adding that to the comparison as well - but it crosses the magical $500 barrier. Brighter / higher res screen than this one. But no fingerprint reader (I'd be OK looking past that as long as facial recognition is an option). I would guess the Acer is sleeker than a HP - but yes, community thoughts would be appreciated.

The Spin 713's screen blows this out of the water. Good specs otherwise on this HP.

Another option would be the Asus from BB here:
https://slickdeals.net/f/15386416-asus-2-in-1-15-6-touch-screen-chromebook-intel-i3-1115g4-8gb-memory-399-at-best-buy?src=SiteSearch

It's i3 and only 128gb but I was able to get an excellent condition one for around $327 (it's gone up now). New one is still going for $399. I think it's going to be between these 3 and maybe the Flex 5 from Costco. Acer got the best screen but the Asus got really good speaker as well as build quality for a CB.

Acer has thunderbolt 4 ports and is able to connect to an external monitor at 4k 144hz where as you will be limited to 2k 144hz on USB 3.0 Gen 2.

Don't need a fingerprint scanner if you have an android phone and use smart unlock and pair the two together.

The acer spin 713 doesn't have a privacy shutter though, for those who didn't know and care about it.
Also, even though acer has a spectacular screen, most won't really feel the difference between that and this HP on a 14" panel. Plus it's coz of that display (and random fan startup) that acer has a mediocre battery life which isn't really acceptable on a chromebook. And then there's the below average speakers and fan noise.

One thing that kinda is a deal breaker for me is the super strong magnets on this HP. It's impossible to open it from the front esp with one hand due to the ridiculously strong magnets and the absence of a lid lip. You'd have to hold it from one hand and open it from the other from the sides of it.

It boggles my mind what people complain about these days.

I believe it's called the HP Chromebook 14, as stated in my thread title. Please let me know if that's not correct.

You must not know much about Chromebooks.

Point to a cheaper one with these spec. Not Windows.

I had a older HP i3 laptop. X360 14. The screen was rated for a similar brightness and I found it to be unusable in a vehicle during the daytime. (My main use). Just FYI, if you plan to use this in any space with a lot of natural light.
