Yeah I figured. As technology does more there's more components to screw up/break. I remember scrounging up $200 for that receiver and another $200 to buy a couple Radio Shack Optimus 15" speakers boxes (still have those and working also). They don't make stuff to the same standards as they used to.

Interesting short read and makes sense. The majority want features over quality sound. Frown

Mine arrived last evening and I hooked it up this morning. It's a huge step up in tech from my Marantz SR7001, but also a pretty significant downgrade in audio quality.

Currently have the Sony STR-DN1080. I use it with a Epson 5050UBe and Sony OLED. The Sony receiver has issues switching between tv and projector. Would this have similar issues?

No pre-outs and no 12v trigger…which used to be common at this price point…now you need to spend over $1K to get this once basic feature.

Pre-outs and good amps (which last years) used to be a realistic way to get better sound quality out of a mid-grade receiver not anymore.

I just got the Denon S750 and I love it. This and that Denon should be pretty similar. 8K is not really a thing, it's more future proofing. TV is still HD, Netflix probably has the most 4K content. Also not a ton of 8K TV's out there.
Its not all about 8k, its the ability to push a 4k 120hz signal instead of 60

Good article. I just sold two Onkyos and a recent $1k Denon that drove a 7.1.4 Atmos theater when I sold my house. I will go back to using my original Onkyo circa 1991 to run a 5.1 surround setup with high quality speakers. Hopefully speaker quality hasn't gone down as much as amplifier quality over the years.

Mine arrived last evening and I hooked it up this morning. It's a huge step up in tech from my Marantz SR7001, but also a pretty significant downgrade in audio quality. I knew this going in though and right now I just couldn't swing the $2500-3k+ to get a comparable and newer unit. My Marantz had started acting up so it was time to replace it, but also at 14+ years old it has been due for an update for a bit now.

The setup was very easy. I did not setup Chromecast or Alexa integration. SQ is pretty decent, and seems to be getting slightly better as it sounded somewhat shrill and harsh at first. It's been playing music from my Oppo BDP-83SE SACD/BD player via HDMI right now, but I'll try analogue inputs later and hopefully that will give a boost in SQ since my source has the improved output stage.

Overall, this should tide me over until the chip shortage is up and I can find something better.
If the sound quality changed, then I would look at setup, EQ, or room correction features to find the reason. The idea that different receivers and amplifiers each have their own "sound" is ridiculous given the current state of electronic engineering. You can rest assured that any perceived differences are due to psychological perception issues or differences in setup noted above.

You will find people claiming to hear differences that they cannot distinguish in double blind testing. This has been known for at least 30 years since the advent of ABX testing. Modern receivers are essentially all neutral. But your brain will play tricks on you and make you think there are differences even when the sound is identical. Google the McGurk effect to see how powerful that can be. Even very slight differences in volume that cannot be heard as different will affect perceived sound quality.

If you want to obsess over measurements to find quality differences then check out audiosciencereview.com. They sometimes go too far and reject units due to inferior measurements even when it is unlikely the differences are audible. Subjective reviewers like Guttenberg, on the other hand, reject measurements and allow free rein to whatever comes into their head. So you hear terms like "warmer," "lively," "sterile," and others that have little real meaning when it comes to sound.

It is safe to buy AVRs based on features and price. Forget the other nonsense. The real differences are in speakers, room EQ, and room acoustic treatments.

I stopped reading after you stated there would not be a difference between the two... Skimming the rest, your post is full of misinformation.
Bottom line, different processors and amps can, and will sound different. There are many variables, but bottom line is a $2500+ AV receiver should sound better than a $500 AV receiver. And my marantz SR7001 is dramatically better than this Onkyo.
Just because one person cannot hear the difference between two sources, speakers, receivers, etc. Does not mean others cannot.

From experience I've had two receivers from them with bad HDMI boards. Both failed out of warranty. Went with Denon and so far 5 years in and no issues.
I loved the Onkyo with how presets were so simple. But maybe they just have too much emphasis on processing rather than making better boards to last longer.

When were pre-outs and a 12V trigger common on a sub $500 AVR?

If I recall correctly you were closer to at least $1000 MSRP to get those...which is closer to what I would call a mid range receiver...ie..Denon X3700
