This is a very controversial drone by DJI, because it falls between traditional photo/video DJI drones (Mavic/Phantom) and the FPV drones that you fly around obstacles or race.
FPV drones are notoriously hard to fly and take many hours to even learn the basics. They are nothing like traditional DJI photo/video drones that are stable, easy to navigate and anyone can start flying them minutes after unboxing. FPV drones are much faster, responsive and are more agile than the photo/video drones.
DJI FPV attempts at being an in-between or "hybrid" model. In "easy" mode, it is stable and easy to fly, like a Mavic. It takes pretty good photos/videos. But the main attraction is advancing your flying skills to the "sports" mode, where it is close to FPV drones and it is a thrill to fly it with FPV goggles. However, DJI FPV is bigger and heavier than most FPV drones and not quite as agile.
Hard core FPV pilots hate DJI, because it is not a "real" FPV drone and allows "noobs" to feel like they are in the special FPV club without grinding through hours of training.
Photo/video drone pilots don't like DJI FPV either, because its camera specs and features are on par with the low end DJI Mini 2, at more than twice the price.
This is probably the reason why DJI is discounting it $300 only a few months after introduction. It is a somewhat unique model without a broad market appeal.

If you want to get in for cheaper than $1k, you've got to go with a fatshark, and it is in absolutely no way equivalent to the DJI FPV system.
Right now there is nothing on the market that is close to being competitive with the DJI FPV system. It has a high resolution, low latency and a 60fps digital feed. Competitors for sport piloting have terribly annoying analog transmissions and competitors for cinema piloting have high latency, making it unusable for sport piloting. In 2021, the DJI FPV system is so far and above anything else that it's fair to say that it's the only modern FPV system on the market.
You can buy a DJI FPV system without the drone and use it with your own custom built drone. That kit doesn't come with a drone or camera, but you do get goggles, the remote and a transmission unit you can mount on your own drone. The cost is $1,000.
I'd rather buy this for $1k and the air transmission unit for $100.
This is a slick deal.

"you can get a better fpv setup for about just as much with HD feed and everything."
Since when did "about just as much" equal $400-$500 more?

DJI will likely advance the market, as they usually do, in whatever market they enter. That's a good thing for everyone.
Whether you like their product or not it's something else altogether.
This is a decent deal, for those interested.
Just know, this is for flying fast and with a low latency video feed. This is not a cinema drone with 3 axis gimbal to stabilize the image. It'll be tilting and spinning, just like the drone did. If you want pretty pictures and smooth footage, look at the Mavic or Autel EVO 2 lines. If you want FPV, this is a good place to start.

Camel shows this combo and the fly more @ $300 off.

It is a lot of fun but dang it is so loud. I feel like it is hard to find a spot to fly it without pissing someone off so I actually don't fly it as much as my Mini 2 or my other drones.
I paid $1500 for it and I'd do it again.
But FPV drone shots are the future. Be kinda cool to get in ahead of the curve.

DJI made something for the masses. Sure it's not perfect in some ways, but it's convenient and just works
Having said that, DJI is on my stink list right now, my Phantom 3 won't take off anymore due to an "esc communication error", but it was working 100% last time I put it away
