There's comments like this in every MacBook Air M1 thread, but have no clue what they're talking about. Look into how this thing actually performs instead of thinking it's the same as the Intel chipsets with 8gb of ram.

A year old laptop that is going to run circles around any other comparably priced laptop.

Costco has two years warranty, so that's a plus

I picked one up at the Owings Mills, MD Costco this evening. I also picked up AppleCare since it covers accidental damage. I live near MicroCenter which has them for $20 less, but all-in-all the Costco deal is better.

It isn't a concern if you can baby your equipment. An out of pocket repair for a screen starts at $455 if you didn't have AppleCare+ and they are saying it is user damage and not equipment defect. Given that this thing is going to likely live in my living room with young kids around, I'm nowhere certain I won't be needing repairs.
Flawed logic. Spending several hundred dollars on apple care, plus the deductible to insure an item that costs several hundred dollars to begin with only makes sense if your living room is inside of an active volcano.

At certain point, it makes more sense to not repair certain tech items at exorbitant prices and just buy the latest iteration of the product with better specs. If I had to spend half of my purchase price to fix something after a few years, out it will go. In any case, I would think not too many people have to worry about kids breaking stuff.

Unfortunately the m1 chip only supports 1 external display. This might be a dealbreaker for some that need multiple external displays. Rumors have it the the m2 will support multiple displays, but who knows when that will happen.
You can run multiple displays with display link capable docks

Is this laptop capable of comfortably handling music production software such as Reason or Fruity Loops? How about Photoshop Lightroom?

From the reviews I've seen made for photography, the new M1 optimized photoshop and Lightroom run very well and smoothly. The pitfalls are working on a 13.3" screen isn't great.

So are most people getting AppleCare with this? Is it even worth it if you get 3 (or is it 4?) years with Costco citi?

I picked up one at Cosco over microcenter because of 2 years warranty. Turnouts Apple product is excluded from this. I confirmed with store manager. Please call your store first to confirm. My 2 cents.

unless I am mistaken. computers are covered by the extended warranty. The only exception is the touch screen tablet.

Costco extends the manufacturer's warranty up to 2 years from the date of purchase.

The 2nd year warranty is offered on the following items:
Televisions
Projectors
Computers*
Major Appliances†
Water Heaters

See the manufacturer's warranty for specific coverage terms. Costco reserves the right to fulfill the second-year warranty obligation through, at Costco's choosing, repair, replacement, or a refund up to the purchase price. Common exclusions are data backup and software replacement, physical damage, or liquid damage. Costco Concierge services advises backing up your computer frequently.

Call Costco Concierge Services at 1-866-861-0450 for more information.

*Excluding Touchscreen Tablets.
†Refrigerators (above 10 cu. ft.), freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range microwaves, dishwashers, water heaters, washers and dryers.

If you scroll down to the "Warranty & Services" section of a MacBook Air product page on the Costco website you'll see "2nd Year Warranty" listed.

I called Citibank to verify warranty coverage. You get two extra years after the manufacturers warranty expires. Therefore, one year warranty via Apple, and two years via Citi Costco credit card - for a total of three years.

If you use some other method to pay, you get two years warranty - one year via Apple, and one year via Costco Concierge.

One thing to note is that the warranty will only be for malfunctions and not accidental issues. If your'e worried about say a screen crack you need to get AppleCare. if you're worried about your SSD failing that would be a warrantable action in most cases.

Hope that helps you out!
