Why not just buy this and trade in to Best Buy for the 13 mini? Upgrading from 12 to 13 costs about $80 (assuming you're not in CA where the tax is much higher) so you're looking at paying under $400 for a new iPhone 13. You could even upgrade to a higher end 13 for a few more $. The BBY deal is probably one of the best ones this year if you have an iPhone 12:

Edit: best buy doesn't care if the phone is locked.

I have Total Wireless, and plan to keep the device for 12 months anyway. Note that the referral program is generous, and you can essentially go the first 5 months for a total cost of $50 for the service using the referral codes ($25 each of the first 2 months, and the next 3 come free with the code ... this if you don't use much data, or 4 months if using more data) (you can add as you need) ... and it's Verizon towers ...

There is new rsim. You pop in! Unlock! And take it out and phone works like it's factory unlocked! That's the next level of rsim from the one 3 years ago. If you search for rsim it should be a plain white Sim card.
Which RSIM version to buy now? Thanks

For 12 months requirement, do you have to use the service, i.e., keep the SIM in, or you just need to pay for 12 months service? Learn it hard way that cricket requires you keep the original SIM in the phone no-stop for 6 months to get automatic unlock. Am thinking about this, get the phone, use RSIM to unlock and use for my main service, and keep the total wireless plan as a backup plan, as some other people mentioned, for it's cheapest plan, it could be reasonably cheap with the referral/rewards things.

need to keep sim in the phone for 12 months. They want to make sure you are using the service. The SIM can't be used in another phone, and the phone can't have another SIM in it.

Thanks, that is what I am afraid of. Do you have to have that SIM in no-stop for 12 months? And does having another SIM with the phone ruines your chance of getting it unlocked? With cricket, I just test to see if the orginal SIM will work with another phone, and the 'unlocking' countdown stopped, even I put the the SIM back within one hour.

From what I can read, it looks like the referee gets 5000 points and that's good for two months. How is it three months?

Did I miss a disclaimer that there's a limit of two phones?? Usually when there's a limit they tell you ahead of time.

Yes putting another SIM in the phone restarts the clock again. Don't risk it.

No they didn't say a limit, only after ordering my 3rd one did I get an immediate cancelation and email as well.

Has anyone recently successfully traded in at best buy with straight talk or total wireless for the current tmobile promotion ? I don't see the option for either on bestbuy when attempting to do this online. Also, is there any difference between the straight talk or total wireless iphone mini models?

If you put another SIM from Tracfone family, yes the clock most likely will restart. However, if soft unlock the phone with RSIM and use other carrier's SIM, I don't think they can tell.

For the Cricket phone, if take the SIM out and use in another phone, the clock will just stop but not restart. Put the SIM back the clock will continue from last point.

Phone noob. Did read through the thread.. but wanted to seek some wisdom from the more experienced crowd:

I'm on a grandfathered TMO plan that's never eligible for phone upgrades. Wanted to buy this phone for a parent (in 60s). Wondering how straight forward the process could be if I wanted to use with T MO? Based on what I can tell, I could do it, but it would require to unlock RSIM? If anyone can point to a more detailed instruction/process i'd really appreciate it..

Thanks!

Update: Looks like people are using this for trade in.. more details please!
