Why not just buy this and trade in to Best Buy for the 13 mini? Upgrading from 12 to 13 costs about $80 (assuming you're not in CA where the tax is much higher) so you're looking at paying under $400 for a new iPhone 13. You could even upgrade to a higher end 13 for a few more $. The BBY deal is probably one of the best ones this year if you have an iPhone 12:

Edit: best buy doesn't care if the phone is locked.

I have Total Wireless, and plan to keep the device for 12 months anyway. Note that the referral program is generous, and you can essentially go the first 5 months for a total cost of $50 for the service using the referral codes ($25 each of the first 2 months, and the next 3 come free with the code ... this if you don't use much data, or 4 months if using more data) (you can add as you need) ... and it's Verizon towers ...

The iphone mini 12 is also available directly from the Total Wireless (and Straight Talk) website at $299. If you click through from TCB, then you can get $31.50 back, and if you have a cc that bonuses telecom spend (like an Ink Cash or Plus) then you can probably get extra points there.
All of those are OOS. Thanks for mentioning though.

Just picked one up. Note, I asked for the Total Wireless version and was told they were out. Asked for Straight Talk, they had one (maybe more, I don't know). The sim that's attached to the back says it's for either Straight Talk or Total Wireless, so I'm guessing it's actually the same packaging for either. Just a heads-up in case the one you want is out of stock; try asking for the other and double-check the box for yourself.

Just placed the order with Best Buy for the 13 (mini), once it's ready to pickup I'll take this one out of the box and pop a T-Mobile sim in it to see what happens (curious if it'll lock to T-Mobile or if it's somehow different to the regular flex ones). Until the 13 is ready for pickup I'm leaving the 12 in the box just in case I need to return.

Edit: as expected, didn't work with the T-Mobile sim, even when it was the first one inserted. I had no issue doing a temp rsim-style unlock (mine is the plain white sim, more durable than the flimsy ones that go over another sim). Anyway, no issues trading in to Best Buy for the 13 mini. Fyi I selected that the 12 mini was locked to T-Mobile and NOT unlocked. About $400 after tax for an iPhone 13 mini (that will soon be unlocked) is a pretty good deal.
Which iOS to unlock with RSIM? Does it matter? Thanks

I Just completed the trad-in instore.. BB asked for the carrier name and also told me that they don't have access to prepaid service inventory to check. I told its locked to 'Verizon'. He didn't do the IMEI check. I am not sure if they do it later so we have a risk if they can't find phone from Verizon.

So my iPhone 12 mini from Walmart arrives tomorrow. How do I upgrade it at Best Buy to the 13 model? I have an rsim ready to go for the 12. I'm on mint. Never done all this before. But I could really use this deal as my current phone is practically dead haha

It was on 14.7 I believe. You're supposed to update to the latest but I forgot. Not going to complain.

Go to local walmart store. Every store near me i.e Atlanta has stock of 2 or more as of this afternoon.

Next time when u start to initial setup via wifi, there is option to skip APPLE ID just under input ID window (different ID or something later). Good luck

If I insert my existing SIM , does the 12 month unlock clock begin automatically. Any way to confirm that the unlock clock has begun?

It's working now again
Does the rsim need to be programmed?
or does it use the phone's internet w/ my cell provider?

What causes it not to work sometimes, if not the above?

I can't find too much info online
