As a previous synology owner I can confirm there are also a lot of problems and security issues. In fact, all these internet-connected devices could be a victim of ransomeware/malware. IMO, instead of saying who has problems, it's more useful to share some tips regarding data backup and protection.
I bought this a year ago, probably the worst purchase of my life. Two full data losses that were QNAPs fault (one ransomware, one bad drive management). Working with support is like pulling teeth. I bought this to be "easy" but I've spent hours upon hours fighting the bad interface, absolutely nonexistent error messages, etc.

Looking to basically bite the $450 I paid for it and migrate to Synology this week.

Stay away.
PC consumes more power than these devices
PC you have to maintain software..its a constant battle
There are several developers working for us in these systems to update the software and security make these systems better everyday

You don't know that. Both Qlocker and ech0raix exploited vulnerabilities in the Qnap firmware itself. Synology has had its problems too.

Everyone purchasing one should take it as a PSA that these can be great devices but to NEVER, EVER port forward it to the internet or use their service that does it for you. Just log into it from your local network or set up a VPN if you really want/need to.
thankyou.

After initially setting up your Synology, be sure to run their security advisor and follow the steps. Simple things like changing the default port number, forcing HTTPS redirect, using the internal firewall to block other countries from connecting, and enforcing 2FA for all users go a long way in ensuring security.

I also highly recommend using Hyper Backup combined with either their C2 cloud storage or another provider.
thanks

Personally i think nas are way overpriced. You are paying a premium for a plug and play box.
If your time is more valuable than maintaining various services on Linux box(es) than a NAS is a tremendous value.

I would worry more about their software quality. After almost 6 years, I am done with their ts-251+. Too many issues causing breakage and wasted time.

Thanks I have had an Asus for a long time but now looking to get a 10G one… Should I avoid qnap? Also looking at synology…

My personal opinion? Yes. These NAS are too slow and software issues have made it unusable at times. Like many others..I am going PC route and installing freenas or 1 of many others to have solid VM supportability and better drive stability

100% agree. I bought a QNAP TS-453be and I no longer trust it with my data or even as a device my network. The worst part is I have no confidence that QNAP will improve over time— they are still doing insanely stupid things like hard coding login credentials into their software (CVE-2021-28799).
Depressing. I've considered buying one of their devices, off and on, for years. Now I glance at an SD thread and think "cool .. oh, right."

I hear you...However last time I checked freenas, was nowhere close to what you can/do with a solid NAS, agree on the underpowered thing...they put slow cpus in these units.

I've had my qnap ts451+ for 5 years and never had any issues with it. Interface is easy to use and easy to setup.

Has anyone had those backplane issues with the 453D?

Stay away.

Here is the reality: Almost all companies have placed semi useless people as their Customer Support front, in order to keep costs low. However, most manyfactures will stand behind their product. Getting escalated to the right person with knowledge and empowerment is the challenge and your goal.

Use RAID 10. This gives you speed and makes it easier to recover data.

SECURITY is something YOU must champion. Getting hit by ransomeware means you had a hole in your security. If your data is that important, don't directly expose it to the Internet, and monitor it's activities. Use a password that has random characters and is at least 12 characters long. Make backups often, store them offline and test the recovered data a few times a year or more to ensure the data is in tact and usable.

The list goes on. My Terramaster was invaded once...ONCE. Cause? PORT 22 was left open for too long and one of my admin accounts had a short weak password. Luckily, I monitor my system often and was able to put a stop to it before it became a horror story.

I must just be some kind of higher level operator than most of the people posting here. I've had no issues with my 453be that were at all difficult or resulted in data loss. I had a power outage that killed a UPS and made me have to do couple disk scans. Otherwise it's been smooth sailing. I must just be a genius or something to get this obviously terrible device to work.

Anyone have suggestions on preventing Plex from crashing all the time in the QNAP software? I have the 453be with 16gb of ram and have to reset the Plex app every couple of days.
Most likely your DB is corrupt. Check the logs it will show locks and sometimes just bad DB errors. I'd post the logs to the plex forum for help if I were you. The devs are pretty helpful and responsive on there.
