As a previous synology owner I can confirm there are also a lot of problems and security issues. In fact, all these internet-connected devices could be a victim of ransomeware/malware. IMO, instead of saying who has problems, it's more useful to share some tips regarding data backup and protection.
I bought this a year ago, probably the worst purchase of my life. Two full data losses that were QNAPs fault (one ransomware, one bad drive management). Working with support is like pulling teeth. I bought this to be "easy" but I've spent hours upon hours fighting the bad interface, absolutely nonexistent error messages, etc.

Looking to basically bite the $450 I paid for it and migrate to Synology this week.

Stay away.
PC consumes more power than these devices
PC you have to maintain software..its a constant battle
There are several developers working for us in these systems to update the software and security make these systems better everyday

I have been running TS430 Pro version for 7+ years. There is zero problem during this time. Just had one WD Red 3TB going bad last month. I have Raid 10, and 16 GB of memory in it. I have a couple of virtual OS running and they have been very stable.

Over all, Qnap has more features. If you understand NAS, is an IT professional, I strongly recommend Qnap over Synology.

Qnap had lots of security issues. Be careful if you purchase one.

disable "admin account" and you'll be 100% safe. I check the log and someone still knocking at my admin account.

it's not the "security issue" but someone is trying to get in.

It wasn't the qnaps fault, your pc was infected and had rights to encrypt the data. The QNAP was not infected.
From what I read online Qlocker wasn't malware...the attacker exploited hard coded credentials on the Qnap and just logged in and zipped/encrypted files with the zip utility on the Qnap...so nothing to do with local PCs

Dumb question...why are you guys buying a proprietary NAS server instead of just putting 4 drives in a PC?

Anyone have suggestions on preventing Plex from crashing all the time in the QNAP software? I have the 453be with 16gb of ram and have to reset the Plex app every couple of days.

You running it in docker?

Have had TS451+ for a few years, maximized memory, works great and have no complaints. Does this worth for upgrade?

Got this model a year ago + (4) 14TB WD drives and have had absolutely zero issues. Sooo... YMMV?
Not really- not sure if they have fixed their backplane issues, it will surface in year 3-4 timeframe.. my 2 QNAP died of the same issue

You don't know that. Both Qlocker and ech0raix exploited vulnerabilities in the Qnap firmware itself. Synology has had its problems too.

Everyone purchasing one should take it as a PSA that these can be great devices but to NEVER, EVER port forward it to the internet or use their service that does it for you. Just log into it from your local network or set up a VPN if you really want/need to.

In similar boat but to be honest I don't use my qnap much and really need an "idiots guide in how to make use of this with macs and pcs" because the software makes no sense to me

Yeah qnap have been having a lot of security issues over the year. It is safer to get Synology.

I've had 3 drives in my desktop for a decade with zero issue. I play Plex from it remotely all the time.
