Is it that much better than the previous generation paper white that came out last year?
The paperwhite from before this one came out in 2018, 3 years ago, not last year.

The differences are as follows:

1) The new Paperwhite has a 6.8" screen vs 6" on the older model.
2) The new Paperwhite has a USB-C charging port vs Micro-USB
3) The new Paperwhite has color temp adjustments for the backlight
4) The new Paperwhite has substantially more leds for the backlight for more uniform backlighting (5 leds vs 17 leds)

Whether these are worthwhile upgrades to you will depend. To me the usb-c alone is enough for it to be worthwhile.

Any chance that the signature edition receives a discount this Black Friday?
That's what I'm hoping for as well.

Only the more expensive signature edition does the auto-adjustment of the light. Same lights here, just manually.

Does anyone know if you get to keep your notes/highlights from books you read during the 4 months of complementary Kindle unlimited that you don't purchase once the trial ends? Thanks!
Yes. There are a couple of places you can access the notes/hightights after loans end (this is how it works with library ebook loans, and it must work the same with kindle loans).

You can access them here:
https://read.amazon.com/notebook

Also, if you link a Goodreads account to your Amazon account, any ebook you add on Goodreads will also have a link to your notes and highlights there (make sure to set this to private unless you're happy to leave it public).

Kids edition for 10 more was a better deal. 1 yr extra warrantay, 1 yr kids unlimited, removal of ads and a free case.

I don't know why people find it so surprising to hear that they don't get instant trade-in credit. It's not a secret and the language is very clear in the trade-in process that they don't give the credit and discount until Amazon gets the device and inspects it. Plus it's not like they opened trade-in program just for thanksgiving, it's been going on for months. I sent my device back in October knowing this.

Yes, some people may get it instantly based on god knows what algorithm they use behind the scenes, but that's not the norm, and expecting that to be reality when Amazon is clear on the expectation seems a bit weird.
I can confirm I received both the $25 gift card and trade in credit instantly, as advertised on the product page. This is my 3rd or 4th trade in at this point and it has always worked this way for me.

For those not getting the immediate 20% off, the fine print says the promotional credit is good until the end of February. These will probably hit this price again prior to then, so you could start the trade in now and be ready for the next price drop.
I bought it now and am hoping they'll apply retroactively. It's just silly they're making people jump through hoops

Is this deal better than the Kindle kids deal with cover + 2yr warranty + no ads for $114?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08WQ9DW84/

Don't have kids, just for my use.
That's your decision to make: Is getting the Case, the extra one-year of Warranty and the 'No-Ads' feature worth the extra $10 to YOU?

It feels more responsive or that could be a placebo effect. The increase in screen size is nice as well while still being "pocket-able"

Will this be the lowest price this year?
Nobody knows if it's going cheaper this year, but yes it is the lowest price so far. This Paperwhite was just released this month, I think?

Yea it's been going on for years. I think for most people asking, it's their first time, and they just want to know if there was an option or selection they missed, just in case. Happy Thanksgiving.
I did my first Trade-In about 7 years ago when the first PW was out. Up until about a year ago, Amazon used to give the Instant Trade-In to everyone.
I believe they just got scammed by too many people pretending to go through the trade-in process just to get the discount and then they never actually sent anything in.
So now it's Select accounts only .

The frustration is that I traded in a model worth $5, told them I'd accept whatever they decided (still just $5) and their tracking for the trade says it was received but my trade-in page hasn't updated.

Regardless, they know by their shipping tracker that it's already traded in, and they're keeping it either way, so it makes no sense I don't have my coupon yet.
