Featuring 40 individual grind settings, from fine to coarse, the Encore can please any palate with its gamut of accurate and repeatable grind settings. The Encore has an accurate medium to coarse grind for the increasingly popular manual brew methods such as pour-over, Aeropress, Siphon and Chemex. The specially designed burrs give a precise grind with minimal fines for a flavorful, balanced extraction when making espresso.

This is good deal on a solid entry level burr grinder. Baratza has great support that helped me put a timer switch on my Encore like the Maestro Plus and Virtuoso have. Next upgrade is the M2 burr after my stock ones wear out.

Higher end grinders will have more consistency of grind size. Ideally, you want all grinds exactly the same size so they all extract evenly and you don't get over or under extracted grinds. Burr grinders are huge step up from blade grinders which bash the beans into random sized fragments.

Probably not, if there's any improvement over the "Virutoso" it's not much and I wouldn't spend the money.
Upgrading to the Virtuoso burrs is a supported upgrade that you can order directly from Baratza. At that point it basically becomes a Virtuoso so imho, waste of money to buy the Virtuoso.

I have the breville SGP. Would that setup be an upgrade?
not really, they are at the same level, and yours can do some sort of espresso grind for lower end espresso machine.

Interesting. Obviously, my cheap grinder has a blade. I use it for drip coffee.

This would be a deal that would obviously benefit from a taste test. I do have a feeling that the taste difference would be extemely modest to me, if perceptible at all.
You would be surprised.

My response was to whether the person should spend the $150 to replace their Breville Smart Grinder Pro, which roughly performs the same as this would.

What, Are you saying these do a shitting job at the espresso grind? And, what grinder would you recommend? I'll read up on it.

I've heard nothing but good things about this grinder. I thought it a little odd it was the Only ~$150 grinder people rave about. Because anything else around the $150 price or less is complete garbage for espresso, and close for coffee.

Please tell me what you know. I want to get an espresso maker soon.

The grinder is the most important tool for making good coffee/espresso because without a good grind you can get no further.

What about aeropress? I just got an espresso machine, but it made bad steam, leaked some, and made ok, but inconsistent espresso, so I took it back. The first thing I noticed when using it is it put out espresso with a profile noticably similar to what I get from my aeropress. Then I realized it's probably the grinder I use. I went out and bought some esspresso at a coffee shop so I could get a true espresso grind. When I put that in the espresso machine I got a different flavor and some crema. With my coffee grinder there was 0 or little crema. SO I think it might be important for me to get a grinder that can do a proper esspresso grind EVEN IF I AM USING THE AEROPRESS. I forgot to try the truely grinded espresso beans in aeropress. I'm pretty sure it will be better too. I think I'll go try that now

I just ordered this grinder. And I ordered it in white. I'm probably going to regret that too. It's just that I've seen it as black so many times I want a change, before even owning it.
This grinder is great for everything but espresso because it is not consistent enough for espresso. I suppose you could run it at a 3-5 grind and hope for the best.

I have this grinder but I only use it for drip coffee in my moccamaster, so not being able to make espressos well is not a concern for me.

Honestly, most people probably wouldn't even notice the difference. I doubt I would.

According to Baratza docs, it sounds like I can upgrade my future Encore to the Virtuoso with only the M2 Burr. Motor is no longer an issue. Is this accurate?

https://baratza.com/encore-upgrade-gb2-0/

The M2 is only $35 + shipping ($4.75 to Virginia)

Thoughts on an M2-upgraded Encore for espresso?

I bought this for a total of $123.25 a few weeks ago from La Colombe Coffee Roasters that someone posted here on Slickdeals. Glad the BF deal isn't much cheaper. 😅

I did the M2 upgrade on mine, but I did it as soon as I got the grinder so I can't say how much it improved vs the stock burr. All I can say is that the grinder works very well for pretty much anything besides espresso and has been trouble free for several years.
