Leap: $869
Gesture: $969 Now $979

debating between these two.

Also, Leap is starting $881.45 on steelcase.com. I want to add headrest ($176) as an option. So Leap (1057 with headrest on Steelcase) vs. Gesture ($969 with headrest on Amazon). ConfusedConfusedConfused

When I did my cost-benefit analysis on a chair, I considered how much time I'd spend in it. If you work from home and spend 6-10hrs/day sitting in it, spending 2-3X on a comfortable chair is going to be far more worthwhile than most other ways you could spend that money. Me, I like to work almost entirely from my couch, so I skimped on the chair and spent a little extra for a reclining sofa. 😎
I use the Leap at work and loved it so much I convinced my manager to purchase me one for home (as I am doing hybrid work). It's so understated, but the most fantastic feeling chair ever and supports your back well.

I was going to pull the trigger if the Amex $150 was still active, but it's not. How much better might a deal get? I don't know if I can stomach dropping this much on a chair! Frown

I have a leap V2 at home, had one at work for 10+ yrs as well, also have two leap v1 at home. I've used gestures in the office as well, but for all day use the Amia is my preference, the seat is much more resilient and comfortable, it's also $200 cheaper. Take that for what it is, I've not been impressed with seat cushioning in the leap I bought last year, it seems significantly worse than the one I had in the office for a decade.

One of the comments here advised to try to check out Facebook Marketplace for used one.. I just want to thank that person! Took the advice and was able to save myself some money! Got a pretty decent condition one for $150 bucks! There was a newer version the person was selling for 250. It was definitely one of those businesses that closed and had hundreds of chairs in storage.

How does this compare to Ikea's Markus chair?

I have a Leap V1 that I bought from a used office furniture warehouse. They had dozens available and let one in almost new condition go for $250 cash. This was about 5 years ago. It's a great chair and has still been holding up. If you're tight on cash and don't mind lightly used I would check your local used office furniture supply place.

Considering this.... As a recently converted 'remote' employee, I was offered a Humanscale Freedom with Headrest for $830...through a corporate discount. Is the Leap a better chair? Is the Steelcase headrest available for the Leap as a retrofit, afterwards, if I decide I need it?
The Leap headrest is not available as an add-on and I have not seen any third party kits for it either. When you order the headrest option the entire backpiece is different as the headrest connection is an entirely different back piece of injection molded plastic holding it together. I suppose if you have enough ingenuity you could make something work but the design of this chair is not really made for this to happen in any easy way as it would be on other chairs and you could probably really mess things up. Aside from that, while it's not a great headrest, it does help keep the neck and shoulder muscles loose as you still put weight distributed backwards rather than having your neck support your head, although the design here works better when you're in a slight recline position. Hence, if you sit rigid straight up all the time then the head rest on this model probably won't help you much. But if you like to recline, even a bit, then it will be helpful. If you have major neck issues requiring significant level of bracing, probably not the best chair for you.

The Markus is already a comfortable and minimal daily driver office chair. $200 vs $1,000 showdown.

I'll be able to compare on Dec 6, when the Gesture with headrest arrives.

GET THE LEATHER !!!!i got cloth and regret it so much!
Yes, if you sit a lot in a temperature controlled room this is a great option to look into. I have it and it's real very high grade leather, not any of that faux stuff or low grade leather. I figure I sit far, far, longer in my Leap chair than any sofa or automobile seat so I wanted the full premium treatment and the extra money is well worth it considering this will last for years.

I picked up a Leap V1 at the start of the pandemic for $50. Best $50 spent. Tons of adjustments . I tried out a Herman Miller Mirra but it dug in to sides of my thighs for it to be comfortable. Offer Up is a good place to pick them up if you don't mind used.

Just ordered a refurbished Leap v2 from Crandall Office Furniture yesterday for $506 shipped, comes with 30 day return and 12 year warranty. Saw multiple Steelcase Craigslist listings for well under $400 but I need a few weeks of use before knowing if a chair works for me.
Those guys treated me very well when ordering parts for my early build (2000) Leap V1. Well enough that when it is time for another chair, I'll be buying it from them.

I had a Leap V2 for about two months. I found myself craning my neck forward uncomfortably. The back support just did not work for me leading to trying to correct with my head position. I ended up in a Hayworth Fern that I'm quite pleased with.
i have the same problem with mine - it just leans too far back and i end up cocking my neck forward. that hayworth fern looks interesting. where did you end up getting it from and at what kind of price?

When work from home started I began to have back issues, I upgraded my chair to the Steelcase Gesture and within the month my back issues went away. Think about how much time you spend in a chair, how many hours you will use it over many years and it becomes well worth it, especially if you factor in potential future medical bills without it. It is also very comfortable and the fully adjustable armrests I move all over while sitting in it throughout the day and love how easy they are to change and move.

I used a Herman Miller Aeron at work and found the Gesture to be much more comfortable. The main benefit to the Aeron personally is the mesh bottom for it to be a bit cooler in the summer, but otherwise, the Gesture is better in every other way to me. One of the major selling points initially was the seat frame on the Aeron is hard plastic around the edge which would really hurt my ankle when sitting with a foot up under the other knee, the Aeron made sitting like this not possible. The Gesture makes sitting like this very comfortable though.

If a headrest matters to you at all, spend the extra and get that model, you cannot add a headrest later on. There are two models, with and without the headrest and the back is structured differently internally making it "impossible" to just add a headrest later on. The back is also all cloth so you would need to cut holes through it or potentially damage it somehow to try and mount a third-party headrest.

Picked up a previously owned Leap from a chair refurbisher, and its awesome. I think I paid $400 shipped, well worth it. Really high quality, and I don't hurt sitting in it.

In case people are wondering, here are the main differences between Leap and Gesture as I am in the market for a good WFH chair and have tried both.

Leap: Has lower lumbar 'stiffness' control
Gesture: Has more adjustable 4d arms

Otherwise, chairs are very similar. To me, the Leap feels more 'familiar', like office chairs I've used my whole life. It is more comfortable in lower lumber and seat. The Gesture is more comfortable in upper back. I noticed the gesture promotes a more forward upright position than leap. The Gesture's 4d arms are amazing, easily the chairs biggest selling point.

To me, the gesture would be perfect if it had the leap's lumbar stiffness control and it would have been a no brainer choice if that was included.

Tough call, but I think I would go for the Gesture if price is no object. The added arms controls are nice, it's a more modern looking design, and I feel the chair promotes better posture.

But the leap is less expensive, especially in the used market. As stated in thread, check out a furniture wholesaler. They refurb the chairs, steam clean and often are as good as new. You will save good money.

I also tried some Herman Millers. The Embody feels amazing in most respects, but the upper back is short and narrow, and cuts into my shoulder blades (I'm 6'2"). The Aeron is overrated, not a fan of the mesh.

Anyhow, think I'm going to go with a Gesture. Only decision left is leather vs cloth and headrest or no. Any advice here?

I have Leap at the office without headrest so I decided to get mine with headrest last year.

GET THE HEADREST!

After experiencing both versions, headrest version feels so much better!

You might think oh, I don't lean back much but trust me, you will have this chair for YEARS.

Times you want to sit back and relax, watch few youtube vids etc makes it so worthwhile.

You won't regret it~

man I bought a gesture last year during the sales, thinking it was an investment and I'd never need another chair again... and I just bought another chair to replace it. try to test drive one if you can before diving into a grand purchase that will be a PITA to return.

I can see why people might like them but good lord is it not for me. I can't stand sitting at my desk anymore. I know I saw reviews pointing out flaws which I agree with, that I ignored... really regret not returning it and talking myself into "you just need to get used to it".
