Anyone use this in a NAS? How does it work compared to a NAS HD like the WD Red Plus?

Thanks!

Do I need Unraids Pro license or a cheaper one if I end up with something like 4 14TB Drives, 2 8TB drives and a few smaller ones on that 4-Core PCI 4 machine?

And what would the setup look like? Not a true RAID-5, but some periodic testing of Drive's health and parity checks, so that everything can be restored?

I am trying to maximize the storage space and read speed out of the zoo I already have.

Raid doesnt really work at these sizes...

Your best bet is now "parity". So you could still use your setup, but you want to run freenas or unraid(20% off today). In unraids case, it will scan all drives every 30 days for a "parity check" just incase one of the seldom used sectors takes a dump and you dont realize it.

I tried all those codes mentioned earlier and it turns out they don't stack. Next time I'm just going to buy the damn thing and forget the small stuff. That was the difference between me having one and it going oos on me.

Same here, bro. I clicked on the submit order button and it threw me back to the cart to tell me it was out of stock. I must have missed it by less than a minute.

Unraid licenses dont unlock new features. If you want a 6 drive array, its $60 basic. That would get you 5 drives + 1 parity drive. If one "redballs" and fails smart or the parity check(or even alot of funky errors, unraid is sensitive enough to find bad or not good connections on sata connectors) then the array will run in limp mode(no protection but full access to your files) till you replace the drive. Once you replace the drive the "rebuild" happens and you are back to full protection.

Now you can add/share as many drives as you want, outside of the array, as "unassigned devices". They would just be unprotected folder shares. I use them to host VM's and dockers.

But if you dont add the "few smaller drives", the basic license would due(and you can upgrade in the future, you dont have to complete rebuy to goto pro). 1 14 tb(always the largest) would be parity, and then the array would be 3 14b + 2 8tb, so 58 tb total.

Same issue here. Ordered 2 drives for $400 + sales tax and only received R* cash back for $7. Contacted customer support, let's see what they say.
I only received $3 cashback. Did they write back?

damnit, I thought I escaped this year only buying 2 14s from BB, then you come along and remind me this price is 20% lower for us eventually (plus at least in my case I can argue tax deduction for the spouse's side hustle so why not order 2 moreLMAO)
Feel better WD is OOS.
