Absolutely love the way this watch looks - reminds me of the Breitling Navitimer. If it had a sapphire crystal, I'd be all over it. Can't stand my watch crystals getting scratched up though, and I'm way too careless not to scratch a non-sapphire.

Yeah it does though the lack of a two tone dial makes this look a lot more busy imho.

They'd make a killing if they made it with a white dial and yellow gold bezel.

You're not wrong; it's absurdly busy. But the reason why it isn't two tone is because that wouldn't make sense. This watch is essentially an E6B flight computer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E6B) posing as a chronograph. That bidirectional bezel is a circular slide rule. The multiple concentric registers allow it to perform multiplication and division as well as aeronautical functions like unit conversions (kilometers, statutory and nautical miles), ground speed, fuel burn and oil consumption, climb rate, time to altitude, etc. It doesn't do wind vectors, but that's because there's no reverse side to the scales like on the E6B.

I certainly never use any of those functions on mine (for starters, I'd need middle aged or younger eyes to read those registers without reading glasses). But my point is, this is a fascinating timepiece with real horological providence; a modern reinterpretation of the venerable Seiko pilot's watches of the '70's. It looks busy because it needs to be.

If you're into the tool watch aesthetic, this is a very appealing watch. For what it's worth, I too wish it had a sapphire crystal, but Seiko's Hardlex gets something of a bum rap. It's pretty gosh darn scratch resistant and honestly if you're hard on your watches, the aluminum bezel is going to show wear before the crystal does. Non-enthusiasts may not realize this, but the SNA411 Flightmaster is one of Seiko's most desirable watches. And this is a pretty good price these days.

Could always buy an aftermarket sapphire crystal (The crystal for this model is the same size as the Seiko turtle), but that would add another ~ $35 plus probably another $20 for watch repair shop to swap it out. Still not a bad deal if you like the look of the watch.

I have a case press with the plastic fixtures that I bought on a whim. It's a halfway decent one with screw-down action instead of levering. What other equipment would I need to replace the crystal myself? Is there glueing involved here? If so I'm probably out, but if not, I'd consider trying it. Also do you have a link to the sapphire?

And yet I've scratched Hardlex, but not sapphire. I'm just lucky I guess lol

I have this watch for about 15 years. The glass is curved and it looks expensive including the bracelet.
Yes, it is Hardex and I found scratches on it even I was careful.
Seiko marketing said Hardex is developed for their diving watch because it is crack resistance when diving deep.
