Anyone have any experience with using the 150-600 on a Sony E-Mount APSC camera? Would AF even work? Looking for a decent tele lens that doesn't totally break the bank.

Less range but wouldn't their newer Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS work?

I really enjoy Christopher Frost reviews. You can check out his review to this lens with few different camera bodies. https://youtu.be/WoOY5vIoBpE
This is pretty good price given how much everything has gone up. I missed the $649 (with coupon) deal in 2019 as I wasn't in the market for this long zoom but I got in last year at $729 minus $72.90 (10% cash back from Capital One) and $29 (4X points) at Adorama.

Yes, it works fine with a6500, and autofocus works. I use the Canon variant with Sigma MC11 adapter. I can't remember if my MC11 came with the USB dock or if I bought that separately, but I have used it to update firmware in both the lens and the MC11 adapter.

We got the 150-600 last year for bird photography. It's heavy but great. If you are looking for a budget lens for bird photography, don't sit on the fence. Just get it.
Same. I wish I had a solid reason to buy it. I neither shoot sports nor wildlife, unless it's hanging around in my backyard.
It squeezes background for portrait shots without need for ultra low aperture. Assuming you will have enough distance between you and your subject. I would also try taking photos of the moon.
