For anyone like me who was hoping this might be the quad-core i3, it's not:

Processor Model i3-1115G4
Processor Number Of Cores Dual Core

This laptop has a 2 core processor. The I3-1125G4 is the processor everyone wants. It has 4 cores and matches the similar I5 chip in performance, with slightly less graphics capability.

You are incorrect about the RAM. This has 8GB on board and one open slot for up to 16GB module for a total possible 24GB. I know because I bought it two months ago and upgraded to 24GB with this stick of RAM [newegg.com].

A word of advice: don't upgrade to Windows 11 -- they haven't worked out all the kinks yet.

In August I got this laptop. Office Depot had a similar deal, and at that time they gave a 5% for in-store pickup discount. Plus Florida had their sales tax holiday for a few days. I didn't really need a laptop, but this looked like a good deal and I had a few hundred in Rewards that were expiring.

When I bought this Asus I didn't expect a lot. However, it has exceeded my expectations. It's fast even when I open up a few dozen tabs and 5 programs open. The screen, although I don't think is IPS, is considerably clearer than a typical TN.
Since this is a dual core/4 threads, it has plenty of threads to handle web browsing. More cores than that really doesn't change much in terms of the browser experience. That is from me spending 99% of my time online using 2c/4t, 4c/8t Chromebooks, 8c/16t PCs intel/AMD.

What does matter to the experience are the high clock and wattage that the chip can run at. It also can cool just two cores with whatever cooling capacity it has - so the chip is very responsive because it is at a good clock already.

Really, 4 cores and more are for heavy, continuous, workloads like editing, compiling etc. The combination of fast processor, NVMe, and reasonable memory makes normal multi-tasking like a user does seem very fluid.

I'm not saying this is the best deal in the world, but it performs very well and is built well - or, at better than most other bargain machines. So consider your needs when you decide.

I bit.. hope it works out. Screen good, fingerprint reader, backlight keyboard, 8gb (can go to 20), so really other than more cores/faster CPU, not finding better at this point for the things that are important to me. Touch screen would be nice, but that would be for sure more in this size. Used coupon listed on site for free after coupon security camera if you spend $200+.
For those wondering, there's a few freebies you can add to your cart for spending this amount of money--small indoor camera, ring light, humidifier, etc. Here's a link:

Ok, I just re-verified that this laptop has 8GB soldered.

I threw a 3200Mhz 8GB RAM stick in there, and now I have 16GB RAM in dual channel.

I guess it also says it on the spec page:

Anyone know why this deal says $349 when scrolling through hot deals but when you click it the deal actually says $380?

The price changed along the way. If you're interested in this or variants Office Depot keeps having various sales on these.

See whether you can do something similar on this laptop?

I'm new to budget laptops, what's wrong with this one? I wanted that target $279 deal but missed it, and looking for something similar.
There's nothing wrong with this laptop at all. If you don't know what core counts or threads are, they likely won't matter to you. If your workload consists of web browsing, streaming video, email, Microsoft office, zoom, etc., you will not notice a difference between this laptop and one costing twice as much.

Yeah that's what I figured—I bought this for my wife for mostly web stuff. I'm still second guessing, since my 6 year old daughter will probably game a little on it, so I've been looking around for i5/i7 with Iris Xe. But I feel like whatever I find is a much lower build quality or can't be upgraded.
I haven't seen any budget laptops that can take a second drive other than this one.
I'm keeping it for now, unless something else comes along!
