As acetate handles like that break down they put out butyric acid which means over time they smell like vomit.
Make sure you do a varnish dip if you want to seal that smell in on any acetate tools you have.

All true. It is also true that these screwdrivers have much smaller shafts that allow them to get into places where the interchangeable bit drivers cannot. It doesn't come up often for me, but it does come up. And they are just so darn cute!

This is a front page deal every two months, and for that reason I downvote ever chance I get.

You can buy a $10 Kobalt 14 piece set (or Craftsman for $11) from Lowes that has interchangeable bits. Unlike this set, you will not lack for sizes and you won't have to worry about losing a screwdriver, because all the bits fit into a hard plastic sleeve. They are also compatible with any 5/32" hex bit if you ever need replacements or specialty sizes.

I have some old Craftsman screwdrivers (early 80's vintage) where the handles turned chalky white and you can remove this with a fingernail.

Does that have anything to do with butyric acid?

If they are clear plastic ones that look like these in the deal then you would want to aggressively clean them of any oils and coatings then easiest would be to do a shellac flake dip. There are some great guides out there on how if you want to tackle it.

Some baking soda & dish soap with a blue scotchbrite scrubby will do the trick.

So that's why my tool box at work smells like puke, I always wondered!
