It is actually really simple. After you get the phone from Metro, set up a Metro account on their website. You don't really need to fill in any additional personal information. Just make sure autopay is off and remove your credit card info if possible. After one month, they will suspend your service since you don't pay for the 2nd month of service. After that, you can let the phone sits for 5 more months, and it will automatically unlock (No need to send in a unlock request).

If you want, you can use the phone on Wifi during those 5 months. Though, I cannot comment whether using Rsim, etc. will affect the unlock process since I always let Metro phones sat in my drawer for 6 months to get them unlocked.

Ebay number is rather expensive nowadays even if it works. Personally, I think the best way to get a port in number is either through Visible BYOD or do their swap deal because it only costs you $5 with referral (Unfortunately, phone numbers from MVNOs like Ting, Tello, etc. won't work even though they are typically cheaper because they are all using T-Mo network). You can also get a Tracfone sim and load with the cheapest plan ($1 for the sim kit and $10 for plan I think) to get a Tracfone number. Just make sure you activate either the Verizon or ATT sim though.

About the port in line account age, some stores check but some stores don't. When I did the OnePlus Nord N10 deal last year, all I needed to do was to give them the port in info and they didn't ask any question. On the other hand, some people mentioned that Metro actually called the number to verify the number is active or called the carrier to confirm account age. All I can say is YMMV.

Officially, you need 6 months of service to get the phone unlocked, but based on past experience, phones always get unlocked 6 months after activation even if you stop using Metro service after the first month.

However, since they can change this anytime they want so nobody really knows until 6 months later.

I always just let them suspended my service after the first month. You will probably have to wait for someone who is more knowledgeable on this topic for an answer.

How recent was that? My most recent unlock was a OnePlus Nord 10 5G around mid-August. Paid only for 1 month of service and then let the phone sat in drawer for 5 more months. After that, all I needed to do was to connect the phone to wifi and use the included unlock app to get the phone unlocked.

I have been following Metro deals for a few years and almost everyone got their phones unlocked after 6 months even without an active account.

Edit: That's my experience with port in deals. If you are upgrading phones, I have no idea how it works.

Thread from the N10 5G Metro deals back then. There is a huge wiki at the beginning.

TMO Best Buy don't have that extra $200 trade in value anymore. But you can still play around with their different scenarios on which will give you the best deal for you.

Oppss I stand corrected, it's back.

Good deal to have a new backup phone for 130. The new battery in itself is worth it.
Anybody else concur with unlock after 6 months even if the service is suspended since most prepaid want active phone for unlock

Can you still buy phone numbers to port-in from via eBay? And can you get any variant other than 64GB?

My understanding is that you can use a T-Mobile locked phone on Metro or any other T-Mobile based MVNO, but you can't use a phone locked by a T-Mobile based MVNO on T-Mobile.

Assuming nothing has changed, you'd have to wait the 6 months until the phone is unlocked to use it on Tmobile.

Seeing $400 for trade-in on T-mobile variant phones, $200 for the unlocked model (I checked S21 for reference).

Sounds like a great deal but this seems concerning... What is the minimum account age that will be eligible?

Yup, definitely deal breaker. They're really slow at "setting up" your phone and when you're done, many times you find out they charged you extra for services that you didn't request. Well it's happened twice with me at Metro stores before regardless of how I told them I don't want any other services... Call to complain to corporate and they'll give you service credit, NOT A REFUND....

No thanks, Cricket, Simple Mobile, Total Wireless, Visible all offer online orders and great prices as well. Also, it's a waste of time to stand there for 2-3 hours while the guy "sets up" your devices...

PS: They also needed my ID and took a picture of it.

PSS: These are CORPORATE stores, NOT "authorized" which are even shadier...

That is inaccurate. Here is Metros policy

Unlock eligibility requirements

We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:

The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
One hundred eighty (180) days must have passed since the device's activation date.

Yeah and all the MetroPCS stores near are in parts of town no sane person would ever want to go. I'm talking multiple shootings nearby nearly every night. Not worth it for a phone.

Is it still wise to avoid "authorized dealers" or are they less shady then they were 3 years ago?
