Going to need additional money for a Roku ultra on top of this. Think I saw them here for about $70. Add tax and price if both now I'm about $700. Think I will wait for a 75". Great deal for some though who don't know entry level android . Way underpowered slowww laggggy

The Google TV ones are the ones having problems. This one is Android TV and should be fine, if a little outdated (they're different interfaces, and Google is bad at names).

Android TV is migrating to Google TV. It seems to be the same thing, more or less. It might just be rebranding and a new interface. But the new products seem to be most often branded Google TV.

I just set up Google TV this week. The signup process was really bad.

I did set up a user account for the TV on my Google Apps domain so I wouldn't have everybody's viewing habits attached to my profile. That may have been some of the issue but it was never totally clear...just a message generally saying that some things may not work with this type of account. What things? Who knows! Google searches brought up nothing.

The TV didn't want to network via ethernet so I was forced to use wifi to start even with a switch port available. I like to keep my wireless network as quiet as possible, and a 4k stream could take a lot of bandwidth away from other devices. I had the TV on it's own isolated vlan since Google Home and the TV wanted permission to access devices on my network and I just want a streaming TV. With the TV and phone logically separated the networking portion got stuck. I suppose rather than having the TV confirm connectivity the app tries to reach the TV for confirmation.

At one point I had to switch from the Google Home app to the remote to progress. Neither device indicated failure. The phone was doing nothing and the TV said use the phone to continue setup. So I had to back out and start a process over again with the remote.

The TV hung after asking for credentials for various streaming services and it wouldn't even power down from the power button on the TV. I pulled the power cord and when I powered it back up the TV worked like it should have and it even brought up the ethernet connection so I was able to take it off wifi.

I might have invited some or all of these problems upon myself because of my network security posture. Some may also be Sony quirks, I suppose.

Maybe I should have bought that LG TV instead of the Sony. I really liked WebOS on the HP Tablets and I doubt LG has screwed it up enough to make it worse than Google TV.

Android TV has always been an excellent OS BUT (AND Big One... Kardashian size) It requires a fairly decent processor, something most TV lack.
TV manufacturers like to give their processors cool monikers:
Sony: X1 Ultimate & XR Cognitive
Samsung: Quantum Processor
LG: a9IA
They also keep specifications a secret!!

I think y'all are wrong about Android TV. If you have a Gmail set up is straightforward. The operating system is smooth 95% of the time and it has all the apps. The UI is nice too. My 2017 Sony still runs Android TV without a problem. I also use Google TV with Chromecast dongles and they work great.

Agreed. My Sony from 3 years ago runs just fine. I utilize the Nvidia Shield mostly though, firesticks are horrible because they get sooo slow over time and need replacing.

Looking to see if it supports Dolby

Edit: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/4-series-s434-android-2020

Meh biggest critiques are low brightness and viewing angles. Audio isn't great either.

Yuppers, not crapping on android interface at all. I have many 4 series of different sizes in the tcl. Back from when they only had Roku to the now one that has android. I read the threads how slow to load android was on entry level tvs due to processing power. It was so bad it was either return or put an external device on it. I chose Roku ultra and it's been amazing for over a year. Even the tcl tvs 4 series with built in Roku run slower than the external Roku hook up but not slow enough to where I need to put one on it. You'll see if you get it. Android requires more processing power than the 4 series puts into it. Then again 6 series technology probably rolls down hill each year so maybe something has changed in the last year. Still nice price for a nice size good brand entry level tv and if it is a problem it's easily fixable.

I have 2 TCL TVs with Roku and they both work fine. The android part is fine, the thing that is annoying is the IR remote. I use a Fire Stick on top of it but it is mostly me being lazy about pointing the remote at the tv.

So if you get an external Roku, can you default to that source when you turn on TV? My family member has a tv with built in roku and it defaults to that and even to navigate to cable box is annoying

The external Roku will have a programmable remote that will sync your tv brand to power and control volume. So once you do that you are powering on the tv on and I get instant Roku screen. Also what's a cable box? Lol
