I just set up Google TV this week. The signup process was really bad.
I did set up a user account for the TV on my Google Apps domain so I wouldn't have everybody's viewing habits attached to my profile. That may have been some of the issue but it was never totally clear...just a message generally saying that some things may not work with this type of account. What things? Who knows! Google searches brought up nothing.
The TV didn't want to network via ethernet so I was forced to use wifi to start even with a switch port available. I like to keep my wireless network as quiet as possible, and a 4k stream could take a lot of bandwidth away from other devices. I had the TV on it's own isolated vlan since Google Home and the TV wanted permission to access devices on my network and I just want a streaming TV. With the TV and phone logically separated the networking portion got stuck. I suppose rather than having the TV confirm connectivity the app tries to reach the TV for confirmation.
At one point I had to switch from the Google Home app to the remote to progress. Neither device indicated failure. The phone was doing nothing and the TV said use the phone to continue setup. So I had to back out and start a process over again with the remote.
The TV hung after asking for credentials for various streaming services and it wouldn't even power down from the power button on the TV. I pulled the power cord and when I powered it back up the TV worked like it should have and it even brought up the ethernet connection so I was able to take it off wifi.
I might have invited some or all of these problems upon myself because of my network security posture. Some may also be Sony quirks, I suppose.
Maybe I should have bought that LG TV instead of the Sony. I really liked WebOS on the HP Tablets and I doubt LG has screwed it up enough to make it worse than Google TV.

TV manufacturers like to give their processors cool monikers:
Sony: X1 Ultimate & XR Cognitive
Samsung: Quantum Processor
LG: a9IA
They also keep specifications a secret!!

Meh biggest critiques are low brightness and viewing angles. Audio isn't great either.
