It hasn't shipped yet. There has been a delay on these since before Thanksgiving.

As noted in the other thread I linked, the Kids edition is the exact same e-reader but without ads, with a case, and with a 2-year warranty. At $120 it's a much better deal than paying $140 for the non kids version since you're getting more for less money with no downside.

This model has a flat display too with the same drawbacks you mentioned. I think It's an understatement to say "just .8 inches" makes a big difference, It fits significantly more text on the new model with it's bigger screen. And BTW contrast improved 15% on the 2021 model compared to 2018.

You can always get a used paperwhite (of various generations) for $25-40 on ebay. Outside of the current 5th generation, they're pretty similar. 3rd and 4th gen have higher res screens, but for text only, not a big deal. Even the worst kindle is easier to read than a paperback.

Honestly I'd probably still be using the kindle keyboard with no backlight that I bought in 2010 if I hadn't stepped on it about 2 years ago. I miss that one -- the keyboard, physical page turn buttons, and integrated speakers that I could play rain sounds on were nice features.

The physical buttons are the reason I have no interest in upgrading from my Voyage. Also, the fact that it has back and forward buttons on both sides! I can hold it in either hand and go forward and back through the book. I'm not sure how you're supposed to advance pages with the touchscreen models if you're holding it in your left hand.

You can either swipe to the left or tap on the screen to advance to the next page. The hit box for the next page takes up a significantly bigger area of the display than the hit box to go to the previous page. You're still able to tap to advance the page while holding the kindle left handed.

I traded in my 7th Gen Paperwhite for a $25 credit abt 20% off the $120 for the children's one with the black cover and 2 year warranty. So paid close to same as this deal, though the USB-C is what motivated me the most.
