This is how I got RDR2 for $10 on PC.
1. Head to EpicGames Store and purchase the Online version for $14.99, a $10 coupon will automatically apply, total will be $4.99 + tax.

2. Install the game using Epic Games launcher and run it.
3. After the game is running, switch to Story mode and purchase via the in-game store for $4.80 + tax.
4. Exit the game, exit Rockstar launcher.
5a. Move the installed folder from Epic to different location so you can install Rockstar version on next step.
5b. (Optional) Go to Epic launcher and Uninstall RDR2. This step is just unregistered the game with Epic Store, your downloaded files are still available.
6. Open Rockstar launcher and you will be able to download full version of RDR2.
6b. If you uninstall from Epic Store using step 5b, re-install the game, wait for about 1 min for Epic starts to create some content, pause the download, close Epic launcher.
6c. Move back the original installation from step 5a to the location where you have Epic version installation pause in step 6b. Start Epic launcher and Resume download, it will verify the content only, no re-download.
You will download total 240 GB over internet, watch out if your ISP has data cap
To launch Story mode, start the game in Rockstar launcher. To launch Online mode, start the game in Epic Games launcher.
Have fun!!

Caveat:
To play story mode only, *move* files from EPIC to ROCKSTAR
To play online and story mode, *copy* files from EPIC to ROCKSTAR
How to install full story mode with only 120GB
1) Follow steps 1-6 from wiki (Post #2) to purchase both online and story mode
2) Close Epic and Rockstar launchers
3) Copy (or move) the folder "C:\Program Files\Epic Games\RedDeadRedemption2" to "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\RedDeadRedemption2"
4) Rename the folder "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\RedDeadRedemption2" to "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Red Dead Redemption 2"
5) Delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\RedDeadRedemption2\.egstore"
6) Start Rockstar Launcher
7) Select installation location as "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games"
8) Game files will be verified in 2-3 min, and game will be read to play
9) Enjoy Story mode, TOTAL DOWNLOAD ~120GB
Another example: buying RDR2 on Steam or Epic, you'll have to have Steam or Epic open AND Rockstar Launcher to play your game.
It's farking annoying.
- Go to the location where you installed RDR2 from Rockstar launcher.
- Right click on RDR2.exe and select Send to Desktop. It will create a shortcut on Desktop. Do this twice, we need 2 shortcuts.
- Re-name the first shortcut to "RDR2 - Story Mode" or whatever you like. Running from this shortcut will allow you to play Story Mode.
- Re-name the 2nd shortcut to "RDR2 - Online Mode" or what you like. Right-click on it and select Properties. In the Target field, go to the end of the line, hit Spacebar and then type -useEpic. Click Apply and then OK to close down the Properties. Check attached file if you are not sure. Running from this shortcut will allow you to play Online mode.

I'm seriously thinking about just buying the it for $20 on Epic at this point. But I just bought Horizon Zero Dawn and Hitman 3, so maybe I should just take it easy lol...
that's what i did last night and got it right away vs waiting
Runs fine on my system, definitely been patched since launch.

This wasn't immediately apparent to me in reading the initial post because I know the post is focused on the mechanics of making this work across epic and rockstar for new purchasers.

Whats the "second set of steps?"
Theres no way to do this without launching the actual game and going to the story mode right? I was hoping i could do it just through the launchers (there's a "story"but submenu in the rockstar launcher but not with the $4.80 price) but it doesnt look like its possible.

I know it's not apparent that this is simply a sale by Rockstar for 'upgrade' from Red Dead Online. I bought my RDO version from Rockstar and could just log into the store and purchase the upgrade on the same account without logging into the game. I made a post about the $5 sale for upgrade from RDO to Red Dead Redemption 2 but the mods chose to merge it in this thread.
(not really bitter even though I mentioned it a couple times, I'm just frustrated that something that is a great deal will have people who could benefit directly from the sale without doing all this hoops are now missing out; because at first glance, like you, it seems this is some hack you have to do from the start.)

I'm not sure about the $20 total?
