Was looking for a solution so I don't have to use google voice for checking texts on a second number .. this plan is great as I can make use of the dual sim feature of the phone and check everything under messages/voicemail
I use this plan for my wife and 500mb (60$) plan for myself. I had to top up data only once. With wifi all over and Google voice, I don't need much data. I don't share this SIM number with anyone but share only the Google voice number. So even if I change plan or sim in future, it's just change of one setting on Google voice account.
I need a cell at the house just for emergencies and calling home occasionally, so something with 911 service. Don't need data or anything else really. Is a prepaid cell a good way to go instead of something with a monthly fee?
It seems $30 a year is better than even a $7 monthly voip phone.
911 works on any cell phone even without service. You can also use any free voip service on wifi to dial any number. No need to pay anything.
I get so confused when I see their listing and description... I have existing RP service for my Dad who just needs a cell phone for emergencies...it was originally a Verizon S6 phone.... Will the renewal in this deal work or do I need to get the $60 360-day plan?
The fine print says: "*Our service will work with nearly any unlocked, GSM or CDMA device as long as your wireless contract has ended and your account is in good standing with your previous carrier....... If you are an existing Red Pocket customer or using a Sprint or other non-LTE CDMA device, you do not need to use the Starter Kit SIM cards...."
So based on their description this should work, but why does the item description say, "360 Day eBay Exclusive Plan (GSMT)"????
All that and more. Yes, Tracfone IS worse. They sold me an empty sim and numerous CS people said there is nothing they could do. You know you are in trouble when you hear a rooster - yes, a rooster - crowing in the background during the call!
I also heard a rooster with Red Pocket customer service. Not joking.
In the past, I have noticed that these plans does not allow tethering, does anyone have any ideas what plan allows tethering for similar cost? Doest need lots of mins or texting, I like to have something I can use occasionally, so want to keep the cost down.

Hahaha I called samsung in November and heard a rooster in the background lol. The lady told me she works from home because of covid, told her the rooster was cool and went on about our business.

Most old Verizon phones are unlocked so they should work on GSM network. But S6 might be a little out of date, which might have problem after they shut down the 2G towers within the next few months. So you might want to get a new phone for your dad (which is what I did for both of my parents).
Now as for the $30 1yr plan, you should buy the new GSMT plan, which they will mail you a sim card to use on your new or compatible GSM phone. They will also email you the activation code first. After you receive both the sim card and activation code, you can go online to chat with an RP agent, and tell them you want to switch your current plan to this new $30 1 yr plan. You'll need to provide your account info to confirm your identity. Then just give them the sim card number and activation code. The transfer process should be done within 10~15mins. Then you can use the new sim card on your new phone.
But I suggest you wait until almost the end of your current plan to do this. Because once you transfer over to this new plan, you'll lose any remaining balance/time of your current plan. And the new activation code that you buy from ebay is only good for 60 days (or maybe only 30, I don't remember for sure). So you must use it within that period.
Do you need to activate this immediately or we can wait? My $20 per month Mint mobile that I thought was better than my T-Mobile ends by June now feels so costly now and I need to switch (I am with Wi-Fi / computer all the time and not really a talkative person )

Well the honey moon is over with RP. D I V O R C E
Used to be OK-ish for the $60 yr plan for low use and practically no data. Any more and you will live to regret it.
'Oh what a deal' soon turns sour real fast; once you have any kind of a problem. And now they are causing many problems to have to call them. The help is a hit and miss nightmare. You have to call an average of two, insane answer machine, LONG hold times and longer as they put you on hold. Why because there systems are SLOW. It's a minimum of 35 minutes to hours to get any one thing done.
RP DOES NOT carry themselves well. You CAN NOT depend on what they tell you. On your first call it's one thing. The next call it's another reason and the third yet another reason why things are not working. Clueless reps. Unprofessional. Poor English. and/or poor connection.
What goes wrong. Failure to transition month to month. Failure to fall over to the LIMITED "Unlimited" SLOW speed that's on some plans. Plus they are known for cutting off customers on the insanely slow speed altogether. Whereas other providers promise they will never cut you off. With Red Pocket you will be lucky if it works with your high speed data.
We have had many phones with RP including GSM and CDMAV and they are both failing reliability.
Frankly RP must be being bought out and don't care anymore. BEware.
TF is worse.
I can second this. Exactly what I've gone through. Instead of making a call, use the web chat. Still takes for ever to resolve your issue, but at least I don't have to stand by the phone.
RP bay annual plan cuts off each month, and have to ask the CS to reconnect. Pain in the neck.
Imagine waiting for an important call, text or email/data and doesn't connect. Only to find your annual service is cut off till CS reconnects you.

Dude, I kept hearing a rooster too when talking to one of their reps! The dude was super annoying to talk to too!
