Inflation is so high. Even with that a chrome book shouldn't be more than $250

What makes this a deal? What am I missing here?

You can get windows laptops with 11th gen i5 or Ryzen 5 5500u processors with 8gb of ram, some with or without touchscreens with similar 250-nit IPS displays and more storage (256gb+) for almost this price exactly, and they've been around this price for a good month or more.

Why would you pay the same for a chrome-OS machine with a worse processor and less storage? Just look at the laptop deals on this site that have been posted in the past 30 days… what am I missing?

One, kindly do give me the links of the laptops with the specs you just mentioned.

Two, if online work is all that you do then chromebook is best suited and this won't slow down for a decade. However, a windows laptop slows down considerably after a few years.

So a chromebook with i3 and 128gb storage would last you more than 5-6 years at least, a windows laptop with the same specs would most likely not.

I'm going to hijack this comment and save the guy some time:

1: literally just go look at the slickdeals laptop section.

https://slickdeals.net/f/15535093-hp-15-6-fhd-amd-r5-5500u-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-spruce-blue-windows-11-15-ef2126wm-399-99-fs-or-store-pickup?src=catpagev2

https://slickdeals.net/f/15503413-399-99-lenovo-ideapad-3i-15itl6-15-6-ips-touchscreen-laptop-i5-1135g7-8gb-ddr4-3200-ram-expandable-256gb-nvme-ssd-backlit-microcenter-in-store-only?src=catpagev2

https://slickdeals.net/f/15480316-gateway-11th-gen-i5-laptop-16-gb-memory-512-gb-ssd-room-for-2nd-ssd-windows-11-ready-429?src=catpagev2

2: Windows laptops have advanced on the hardware side dramatically in the last four years. A Ryzen 5 5500U isn't slowing down anytime in the next five years at the least. It's a 6-core 12-thread monster that demolishes even my old desktop i7 6700k in day-to-day use (and that thing still does just fine and it's getting quite old and a desktop CPU vs a low-power laptop CPU) .

For reference:

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/comp...3877vs2565

And 3:

There is nothing any of those cheaper and more powerful windows machines can't do that a chromebook can, but a chromebook can only do maybe one-tenth the things a windows laptop can do -and past that, there's nothing stopping anyone from replacing windows with ChromeOS at any point in a device's life. It takes a $5 USB-drive and some patience, that's about it.

With that in mind you can find nearly-identically specced windows laptops as this Chromebook for far less money:

https://slickdeals.net/f/15516862-asus-vivobook-14-f415ea-ub34-14-laptop-329-99-free-expedited-shipping?src=catpagev2

The whole idea that windows laptops slow down stems from over a decade of Intel ruling the laptop market and only giving customers access to the same shitty 14nm processors that maxed out at 4-cores and 8-threads and drew dramatically more power than today's modern Ryzen laptop chips. That notion is a dinosaur.

Again, this matters if you do regular non-web work. Many people don't anymore. If you live on the web, it'll be less efficient doing those tasks than this Chromebook.

I don't think this is a deal either, but I just don't want to waste my time with those chrome os braggart. They ignore the basic price and spec fact and just want to make every chrome os device a deal.

I am big fan of Chrome OS and Chromebooks, but the prices are out of control, tbh. Just take a look at this https://slickdeals.net/f/15520726-dell-inspiron-14-laptop-299-88-plus-free-shipping?src=SiteSearchV2Algo1. Brand New, upgradable, serviceable, FP scanner, the same CPU, second slot for a second drive, backlit KB and such more! And it was only $300. This is just one example. There were some crazy deals for their XPS line-up under $500.

Again, I am not trying to shit on Chromebooks. I love them, they are simply to use, easy software easy and power wash. But the prices man...

Time is money and market prices - without hunting for sales, doing to buy/return cycle, etc, the vast majority of people don't have time for that. So thy buy what they use, need, and what's currently available.

The deal on this chromebook is you could get a good deal on a good open box. I did this last month and got an Open Box excellent, got lucky as it ended up being a Brand new unit with factory seal. . .for $313. Looks like $313 only gets you Open Box satisfactory this time around.

I would rather pay $13 more for this chromebook than the Dell in your link, non touch only 4GB ram, and expired Besides this one is has a more solid build quality than inspiron class.

And I have plenty of the dells and other PC desktops and lappys. I want something different.

That is exactly why we need to provide useful information in the comments. By only bragging how good chrome os is will not help these people to make a just decision right?

Ok, people should only buy Windows computers?

Your deal is YMMV. And apples to apples is $150 more not $13. Dell is brand new. And yes, it doesn't have a touchscreen, which a lot of people don't care anyway. A touchscreen is nice to have and don't care feature type of thing. But I bet you love watching movies, taking pictures on Instagram, posting stories on Facebook and some funny videos on Tik Tok. Have fun!

11th Generation Intel Core i3-1115G4 is a bit overkill for a Chromebook.

Speed is not unwelcomed, but if it contributes to a $450 price tag then yea it's a bit exensive.

That's not his/her point. It's good to know your options, what's out there. I personally prefer Chromebooks. But they have become very expensive for the specs and quality lately

If you're clicking in a $450 Chromebook thread I'd venture you know what you're getting into. The problem is sone people will say you're always wrong.

I have 4 2021 windows laptops, but am still a majority chromebook user. At any rate, windows machines are used to do the same thing my Chromebooks are. And they don't do that better whatever you think of the value.
