Nevertheless, one can acquire a working level from even the cheapest selection by testing before purchasing, or buy several and returning the 'junk' ones. If not accurate, a level is worthless.

For level on the same horizontal surface, flip end to end and you are wanting the bubble to be in the same exact spot.

For plumb on the same vertical surface, flip over side to side for the same end bubble to be in the same exact spot. Then check the other end.

We usually buy our Stabilla levels from Fastenall, but I still check in store to make certain every bubble is in the same exact spot when flipped or turned. Surprisingly for the price and made in Germany, not all are. I never loan out my personal levels; not ever ---but if you have, or you banged it around, or it has sat for a long time, check before usage.

Seems a good deal! $5 near me, too.

Edit : just went to the store to check these out... Tried 8 pairs and no two seemed to have the bubbles align - no thanks, even for 5 bucks.

An fyi for people that might not know, there's apps for levels also. The one I use is just called 'bubble'. Since my phone is always on me, it's my go to unless I need a long box level or need the magnet for plumb. One feature of the app that is really nice is there's an audible 'ding' when level. Even better is that it also does two dimensional level. Laying the phone flat and it measures fore and aft and side to side at the same time.

Dollar Tree one is fine. I didnt like it at first but I noticed my brother using it interchangably with his milwaukee level. My brother works for a store assembly organization for Home Depot.

FYI if you have an iPhone, it comes with a measure app that has measuring and leveling capabilities. Pretty darn accurate and can be used in a pinch.

If using a phone app… be mindful of protruding vol and power buttons and cases which will offset measurements. For a picture frame - sure. For any type of wood work, get a good one level that you've tested the calibration with the flip test.

I stand to be corrected but I also prefer a longer level for most of my jobs. I'll throw up my 4ft level for 90% of things just because I trust it more than a small torpedo level you might get with a tv mount kit.

Yep i use those ones too. But they tend to break over time from falling or being stepped on. My other levels don't do that.
