But will it accommodate an addit'l m.2 drive or 2.5" SSD so you can make it dual boot? Many laptops do but I cannot see from the spec page nor could I find a manual for this on the HP site...

Depends on what you are doing with it, but in general I prefer more cores. So the I7 would be my pick.

You can dual boot with only one drive. Look at the Grub boot loader for more details.

They are very different. High end vs entry level. 17" vs 13". If size doesn't matter to you, there are better deals of 13~16" laptops.

Thanks TochiT this looks good as a general guid to HPs 17" laptops but does it apply to ALL HP 17" units? That's concieveable but seems unlikely. Usually it's no prob to find a specific model's maual online.
