Well it is a convenience, perhaps not a necessity, I have a relatively high powered plug in that has adjustable heat and it is indeed useful - if it is dripping too much you turn it down a bit, dial it in a bit, nothing crazy, but I see some reviews saying this thing drips a lot and could be due to high heat, which will also cause the glue to off-gas a bit and turn brownish. The higher model from Ryobi has two heating levels, which I still think is kind of inadequate but better than none.

You can't even adjust the heat on this, pretty weak-sauce.

Once I see it ooze I turn it off and get a few few minutes of working time under control for detail projects. If I am doing full sticks at once I'll leave it on and go rapid fire til I am done.

I got this one bare tool for less than $20 some years ago and it works well. I also got the smaller portable one that uses the mini glue stick as it is more convenient for certain job. I know there is one model with two power levels, but I don't think that function to be that important. If you don't have any and the price of the adjustable one is good, than go for it. I just used this one for an hour and I did not see much dripping problem. The smaller portable one would be even less a problem as it cuts off power whenever you pick it up and the stand has a drip tray.

Chart says only higher model with two levels comes with drip tray... Are you referring to that or does it come with this too and comparison chart is wrong?

The chart is correct but you are wrong. There are two models with drip trays. The smaller portable P306 has a drip tray on the stand with battery.
