This would be have been an even better deal if Google Fi supported esim on these Samsung phones, but as far as I can tell it is not yet supported.
If the sim isnt in the s21, you dont get credit. They changed it to be active, meaning, you are actually using the account
You will instead lose the $400 savings and be charged that at 4 months. You will need to use fi for the 4 months.

The promo works with the $20 subscription. Keep in mind they charge mobile data separately and your bill may be higher than that ($10/1GB). You're supposed to keep the line active for 120 consecutive days, otherwise you'll get charged the full price of the phone. Rule of thumb: leave the SIM in the phone for the duration of the promo.
S21 does have eSIM + physical SIM, but eSIM is not currently supported with S21 series. With the latest Android 12 update, the S21 does brings back support for eSIM.
Fi works great for overseas travel. Keep in mind your line can get suspended if you use it outside the US for more than 30/90 days (I think).
Cannot say enough terrible things about Fi. Incompetent from understanding their own plans to screwing up billing. In 5 months of service I've wasted more time dealing with them than I have combined over my other 25 years of having a plan on other carriers. People warned me about how awful Fi is. I should have believed them.
It would have to be discounted way more before I would even consider recommending this to a family member or friend.
Also, what is the idea behind eSims? That would mean you don't need to physically replace the SIM to change your phone number? If so, is only a major carrier able to do this, or can you opt to use a prepaid SIM and get it configured on your phone? Thanks.

The last part is incorrect. I have used FI overseas for more than that duration and nothing happened. Unless there are some other rules to that.
FYI. There's people who got their accounts suspended over that. Look it up on reddit.
Fi does mention this in the T&C's:

"The Services are offered only to residents of the United States. The Services must be primarily used in the United States (territories not included) and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Google Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming."

Thank you! 'You learn something new every day.' Yes, based on this I might got lucky or maybe because my usage was super low, it didn't come up as a high usage on their system. I'll keep that in mind.
can someone else confirm this? coz $400 is a lot of money

It is a great price for an awesome phone and Google Fi is the only service that provides LTE speeds for data while roaming overseas, which is very helpful if you are a frequent traveler.
