it should be noted that Sony did send a firmware update out to add VRR support after the Rtings review. Rtings has not gotten around to testing it after the update, yet. These sets do have VRR now.

This is an excellent tv for the price. I have the 85" version paired with my PS5 and it's just awesome!
Sony added the VRR support during an update in December.
I have an Apple TV 4K connected as well for HBO, Netflix, and Disney+. All the content that comes in Dolby Vision looks stunning.
The built in apps work great as well, but if you do a side by side comparison, the Apple TV is pulling down a higher bit rate.

I agree with comments here about X90 being more preferred due the local dimming LED array. It's nice to have, but not a deal breaker considering the cost of this X85J.
The X85J has a full panel array lighting which is still a step up from edge lit panels.

Good point on the off angle viewing. You would need to step down to the X80J which has much better viewing angles. Also of note both this model and the X80J have a ATSC 3.0 tuner for next gen tv which is a nice bonus for the ota crowdSmilie

You know they're not the same TV... Right? The X81CH is the Costco version of the 2020 X800H, and was replaced in 2021 by the X80J. Overall, this X85J is a better TV, but if the warranty is what's most important to you, then Costco may be your move.

Did anyone pick up any additional warranty options for the X85J? I've only seen the Allstate/squaretrade one not sure if it's worth it

Perfect timing, I was eyeing the 43" but my Vizio 65" started acting stupid. Got the last one at my local store. It was open box (certified) got them to slash another 50 bucks off. For those that don't know, you can haggle the price of open-box items at Best Buy.

How should i compare them: normal netflix usage with some console gaming. Looking for 65inch

I'd compare rtings.com vs sale price for your use. Generally OLED for dark rooms QLED for brighter and UHD is budget. OLED generally best overall but most expensive

Unfortunately he doesn't have the X85J on this chart, but presumably it's a little better than the X80J which he likes ... and they're about the same price. Personally I'm waiting for the Hisense U7G price to drop a little further - I'm guessing/hoping the 65" will drop to $700 within the next month or so.

The TCL 4-Series is not on this chart either - but if you're on a budget, don't care about having the best specs, and just want a decent reliable TV, that's probably your best choice right now. There's a recent slickdeal thread for that TV.

I ended up stopping into a Best Buy anyways just to check out TVs and compare sizes (I was torn between 55 and 65). And they had an open box LG 65 inch nanocell 90 for $900, so I ended up snagging that. It was $100 more than the Sony, but it seems like a better TV.
Most expensive impulse buy I've ever made, lol.

I've had the X85J for a week now, amazing picture. I had a Vizio M7 but it had switching problems with my Apple 4k and I took it back to Costco. This TV is a much better picture than the M7 but also $200 more. Was worth it to me.

Im interested in this TV at the price point. Are all Sonys now plagued with ads like other TVs nowadays? Didnt they update these so you have ads on the homescreen that cant be easily removed?
