This is basically an x90J without local dimming. Anyone comment on how important that is? My current x810C doesn't have it but movies still look great.

Contrast is pretty good without local dimming. On my x90j it's disabled for gaming already. On movies is a toss up if it helps or it is just annoying since you get zones active or unactive causing some blooming.

Rtings lets you put up videos of two TVs showing dark scenes, if I do that the X90J looks much better - black is black - while on the X85J the black parts of the screen are grayish.

Not sure how accurate that test is (dark scenes don't look gray on my X810C).

I have this . Its great tv if i need better picture quality than this i will have to go oled .

Local dimming is very useful "IF" done properly.
TV manufacturers have a weird game. Top notch panels with crappy local dimming OR the reverse.
Sony is known as the leader in many features but local dimming is not one of them.
