That is an AWFUL story! I couldn't imagine. I am thinking even though DH made us stop when a lot of people would've probably kept driving was a good thing for them. At least it got them out of harm's way for a few minutes. nod

I know I am going to be this over-protective, smothering, stifling independence type of mom. I see boys walking home from the elementary school that is in my neighborhood probably only a couple of blocks and I think I will never let my little man do that! LOL.

They are very fortunate and kudos to you guys for stopping - you're right, most people would have kept going - unfortunately, and I hate to admit it, I'd probably have been one of them. Although I did bring a dog home and put it in his backyard yesterday morning when I found him wandering the streets and no one answered the doorbell - so maybe there's hope for me yet?

Teri - stay safe!! Oooh, Alaska - now that sounds fun!! Except the long periods of darkness - I don't think I'd like that. I would LOVE the cold spells though Cold .

Honest to God, I live 2 houses from the school and I walked my kid to school every single day until he was in 4th grade - only then did I let him walk by himself but watched him the whole time. It's not over-protective, smothering or independence stifling - there are many ways you can encourage independence - my kid is one of the most well-balanced, independent kids I know and I watch him like a fricken hawk! He's 6'2 too so he's a little intimidating now laugh out loud. Oh, and I might add that I drive him and pick him up from school every day too (he's in HS now) - and he wouldn't have it any other way. When he wants to ride his bike, I let him - but for the most part, it's the time we are able to spend alone talking and uninterrupted by anyone or anything - it's kind of a pain-in-the-ass sometimes (since I do work full-time!) - but it's the least I can do - he'll be gone soon Crying.

So you log in and it tells you that you need to see a specialist, yet your bloodwork is within normal limits? I wonder what they are basing the need for a specialist on? I would definitely have questions for the doc too.
Ok let me rewind. I went to doc everything went alright, she notices the rash on my chest and arms and wants me to stop by the lab. First round of bloodwork shows elevated liver enzymes. She calls me back in for more labs and says she wants me to see a high risk doc. I go back in and pee in a cup and get more blood drawn and get my jug for the peing fun at home. My 2nd round lab results are posted online and they are in the normal range. I am not scheduled to see the high risk doc until 6/30. I am ok with it all. My anxiety about what was going on is much lower today. My plan wiith Kaiser is the best co-pay plan they have. I think I only pay $10 for the first prenatal visit, $10 for labs (per day) and $100 for delivery, everything else is covered. My employer pays 85% of my premium.

We had a little boy in our neighborhood once ( 4 y/o ) like that. Hair never combed, barefoot, mom always sleeping, watching TV, whatever. One day, he disappeared. I'll never forget the sound of the infrared helicoptors circling overhead every night searching for him. They found his body a couple of years later, and the man that took him...well, he shot himself. So very sad. He was the kid that was always hanging around because he wasn't looked after at home. He was an easy target, and so are those girls.
That is so sad! When Mini Thrift was about 4 we lived in an apartment where there was a 3 yo boy that was never attended to. One day the mom came to my apartment in a panic looking for him. She was sleeping and he got out. He wasn't at my house. We had the entire portion of our complex looking for him. Turns out he was playing in the bushes and fell asleep. I was pissed at that POS mom!

Get better!

One day I come home from work and the little boy is standing out in the parking lot all by himself. I ask where his mom is, he tells me work, I say where is your babysitter, he tells me she went home. He is in his jammies outside all alone and it is about 11 am. I go to his apartment to make sure he wasn't fibbing and no one is there. Sersiously, NO ONE was in the apartment. I grabbed him some clothes and took him to my house and fed and cleaned him up. The mom comes about an hour later and is freaking out at my door where is he. I go the F*CK off on her. She starts screaming at me that she paid the babysitter good money to stay the night and watch him. Ummm WTF, you were out ALL night? I tell her that I am calling CPS. She threatens me and shoots more explitives my way. I called, they took him and I feared for my & Mini's life after that. Needless to say we bought a house within a few months and got out of apartment living. Horrible horrible experience. I just couldn't stand by and NOT do anything for this poor kid.

Oh yeah, I came back here to post this - ripped off from the coupons thread:

cookingwithkraft.com - more good Kraft Qs - including (like anyone needs anymore of it) Crystal Light BOGO [an 01].

Also, $5 off Scott's grass seed - when you register, use a valid e-mail address since the e-mail the bricks link to you. , just click on "Chicago".

Stories like that are so sad and freak me out BIG TIME now that I have kids.

I hardly let my kids out of arms reach - seriously, let alone out of my sight. DH thinks I'm a nut ball, but that's the way I am. He talks about being a boy and running through the woods around his house. Uh, Nono no way I'm letting my kids do things like that until they are ready to head off to college Wink

Ok so I posted my story and went to bed. This morning I see responses and I realize I shouldn't have posted that like I did, The last thing I want to do is scare people. This happened 13 years ago on Tyndall Air Force Base in FL. The man was the supervisor of a construction crew building new military housing. The boy was Adam Finch (I'll never ever forget) He was always hanging around the construction site because at 4 years old, his mother never bothered to keep up with him. So, it was a wake up call to all of us at the time. I realized this man drove by my house every day. His office was a stones throw out of my back door.

I guess it sticks with me partially because children don't usually disappear from military bases. Living on a military base, they have the ability to cut into your TV and thats what they did for Adam. The base officials came onto our TV's one night and said 'we have a missing child, would everyone please start looking" The sad part is that the mother hadn't seen him all day, and it wasn't until the father came home from work and didn't see him that they even reported it. He had already been gone for hours. If you can imagine an entire military community outside at night, well...that was the scene. The next few weeks were military personnel combing woods, military infrared aircraft searching, divers in the water, etc. Less than a week after he disappeared, they knew who did it, but the coward shot himself the day after the FBI questioned him. So it wasn't for a year or so later that they actually found Adam.

I guess what it taught me is that even living in a community that you perceive as safe, you must always use good judgment with your kids. Yes there are random kidnappings, but alot of times it's the child that is never watched and left alone that is being watched. After that incident, I still let my children play and yes, even walk from school after that. I realized I couldn't imprison them Teehee but there is safety in numbers and they always had to be in a group, and never alone. I know that our moms on this board are not the type to leave their children unattended, you are all great parents and it's obvious how much you love and care for you children just from reading your posts. I hope I didn't scare you taking my walk down memory lane (we tend to do that when we get old laugh out loud) Ok so that's the end of my novel....off to have my morning coffee!

A sad story and a funny story...

A little boy went missing on Oahu back in 1997. The case has never really been solved satisfactorily. Pretty apparent that the parents had something to do with him being missing but they have never found his body. So sad. When you see his pictures he looks like a bright, inquisitive child. Beautiful little boy. If you're bored and want to learn more, google Peter Boy Kema. Warning: His story is pretty sad. So tonight after I read these stories, I googled Peter Boy again to re-familiarize myself with his story. I came across a myspace page that someone made about missing children. I see those faces and wonder who could be so cruel as to want to hurt that beautiful child? Dontknow Weeping I know mine tested my patience to its last thread when they were little. I realized that it was the man upstair's way of teaching ME to learn to have more patience, not them to be better acting.

AND now the funny...Your first child is your starter child. The one that you learn to be a parent on. laugh out loud My oldest wanted to go play at a friend's house one day on the other side of the block. I wasn't happy about this because he insisted on going alone. I talked to the mother and arranged a time for him to come and a time for him to leave. THEN, he wanted to ride his bicycle. Oh noes!! This was almost too much for me to handle at once. Even though he rode his bicycle almost every evening while I pulled his brother and sister around the block in the wagon, I sat him down and lectured him on bicycle safety and what to do if a car was coming. Not 10 minutes after he left, I got a phone call from the receiving mom. My Matthew had an accident. Apparently a car was coming and he was looking over his shoulder so hard at the car that he had ridden his bicycle into a mailbox. Roll I must have scared him half to death before he left the house that day! He is 25 now and over the physical wounds he endured from Mr. Mailbox. Maybe still scarred emotionally, but jeez, I really had a hard time letting him do things alone. AND he ALWAYS wanted to do things without mom hovering. At 5, he went to creative school for summer activities. One day, he stopped me outside of the classroom and told me to kiss him there and not once the door was open. Weeping Broke my heart. He was already growing up.

The bike story happened before the internet and before around the clock news services starting scaring the crap outta parents with these abduction stories. In these times, I might not let him ride his bicycle even now.

Thrifty, I am so glad you helped that little boy. Calling SS on that mother was probably the best thing that ever happened to him. Thumbup

Well, to add to the talk of the day, SunG. might even know about this one as it just happened down here but a 8 year old little girl was skipping home from her friends house. They know she was skipping because the have footage of her from a security camera. Minutes from gettng to her front door, she goes missing. She is found days later in a suit case. Her abductor? Her friends mom, who is a Sunday school teacher, who not only killed her but raped her.
I can not get past this one at all. Disgusting and frightening and horrible.
This just throws out the "don't talk to strangers" approach.

And Teri, I totally remember the name Adam Finch. I am going to google to see if his picture rings a bell, but I think I can even picture him.

WTF, the friend's mother?? I will never be able to understand something like that. You know, when my kids were young my house was the house they played at. There was 2 other homes they were allowed to visit, but that's it. And sleepovers were done at my house too.

I googled Adam last night but only came upon a few links that were pretty much gone. If you find one link me to it pls. It has been a long time ago.
