I prefer 2 alternating sets of eneloop pro AA rechargeable batteries to keep me going.

I used to use these types of products but they all fail eventually and are sent to the landfill for a few million years. At least replacement with individual batteries are less waste
I grabbed an Eneloop kit and never looked back. I have 2 in the controller and 4 on the charger.
And the people claiming they're so much easier must only have one pack because with multiple you're still juggling them like batteries
These battery packs if you take them apart just contain cheap AA or AAA batteries. If you take apart an Xbox 360 controller battery pack you will find 2 AA rechargable batteries and a controller chip in it.
All of these Xbox one batteries are such low capacity too. A standard AA rechargable is 2000mah, so you put 2 of them into the controller, that's 4000mah. Most battery packs I've seen are 1200mah, which is like, 1/4 the capacity of 2 AA rechargable batteries.
Stick with AA rechargable batteries.
Most AA rechargable batteries are just as good as eneloops. Just make sure you are buying a type of battery that says pre-charged or LSD (low self discharge) on them. If you buy any other kind you won't have a good experience because your batteries will lose charge when sitting, but a pre-charged or LSD battery takes care of that.
Amazon basics makes a good rechargable battery.
The other key is to get a charger that charges each battery individually, these are not hard to find, and well, that's most chargers these days.
I don't play that much, but my controllers can last for MONTHS with one set of 2 AA rechargable batteries in them. Even if you play 6-8 hours a day, you are gonna get 2-3 days out of most AA rechargable batteries.
Some batteries are also just rewrapped or rebranded eneloops, though I don't know which brands do that these days. There's only so many factories out there that make batteries.
The biggest thing is to make sure whatever kind of battery you buy is the pre-charged or LSD Low Self Discharge type.
There are other kinds of rechargable batteries out there, and some are higher capacity than LSD batteries, and they may look like a better deal but they are not. These kinds of batteries will lose their charge when they are just sitting, and it doesn't take very long for that to happen, it might only take a day or 2 for them to start losing charge. Then you will pick up your batteries to use them and find they have weakened or have no charge and that's not a fun experience.
The Pre charged batteries will not lose their charge, most will hold 75% of their charge for 2 years.
Amazon basics sells a 4 pack of rechargable batteries for around $7-10 and I think Walmart sells a Ray O Vac brand that is around $7-9 for 4 batteries. Both of these will work just fine.
If you are buying a separate charger, make sure its a charger that can charge each battery individually instead of in pairs, but I think that is most chargers on the market now, even the cheaper chargers.

Also these w packs are available with same battery packs:

I think both the official Play and Charge and this are the same as last gen (Xbox One), updated to include USB C cord instead of the old microUSB.
