I have been looking at air purifiers for a while for an older home, this looks good, but I worry about the replaceable filter being common when it needs to be replaced. I would prefer a washable one (even though they are not as good), and I thought there was a few units that had like no real filter and used ions or something.

Ions just deodorizes and kills bacteria/viruses but you still need filter to pre filter the small particles

"not as good" is a real understatement. They don't do much at all. Even your AC/Heat's cheapo filters will beat any of the washable filters. Other than some pet hair they won't catch much. IMHO given the cost of the units it's pointless. Invest in a robovac if pet hair is a problem as it will clean the whole floor rather than just a few feet around the filter.
Washable filters are basically the mesh filters in your dryer.
For these it's HEPA or bust. If you're a non-smoker, regularly dust/vacuum, and don't live in CA or a place with regular forest fires, filters are a 1x a year investment. Given the improvement to air quality IMHO the return on investment is pretty good.
