Grabbed one last week sold by Amazon.com. I successfully flashed it to the 1.02MK firmware using this USB adadpter:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

and was able to rip a UHD title with MakeMKV.

Keep in mind that if you have a 12th gen Intel, you won't be able to use this to play standard or 4K Blu-ray movies on your PC because Intel removed some required HDCP security thing from their newest chips (citing that the HDCP handshake protocol is a security vulnerability).

For me I only want to master my own content to the disk, that doesn't need a better firmware does it?

Edit: I think I might be picking one of these up and then running it externally when I need it.

Found a 3D print for just this occasion. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3803538

What sort of legacy computers have the hardware to play 4K video?

I've had two of these (as well as a WH16) ripping 4K discs for years now, never had to mess with software or firmware.
Yeah, the older ones were fine. If you read up on it, it is people having to *downgrade* to an older version to get it to rip 4K UHD. Don't upgrade the firmware on yours.

I trashed all my blue ray things including the unopened LG 16x sata drives few years ago.
I did not expect this thing still could be SD again 😅
I did the same thing.Applause I don't understand why I bought BR Burners. I didn't almost use them.

Genuinely curious.

Thanks.
BR Ripping> NAS. The homeless don't have both of them. The homeless don't know about it at all. But they know how to play DVD.

I just realized that I would have quite a bit less interest in this if I didn't have to "hack" it in order for it to have a function that I won't even use. What is wrong with me?

Thanks OP. Tempting so I can rip three 4K discs at once. I have two of the WH16NS40's right now.

Edit - I use DVDFAB to backup my own media for my own use. It will even downgrade the firmware for you.

That's a really good price for a BR writer compared to what I've seen in the past.

Definitely not a deal. Daily price at microcenter.com

Yes, good drive for ripping modified. Usual software at dvdfab, makemkv etc. See forums for info.

Almost any... If you know what to do. Even on lowest end PCs, as long as the gpu supports 4k displays, you can rip to properly encoded 4k mp4 files that don't need much power to playback in vlc etc. See videohelp.com

The drive firmware may affect write quality to certain discs - see firmware history.

Otherwise, no. It'll write fine to compatible discs

Consistently, Pioneer desktop drives writing to made in Japan Panasonic blurays blanks have the lowest scanned error rates. You'd have to import the very latest that just got announced in Japan if you want the very latest, else usa stock ok.

Lg has higher error rates overall, but look at the yss reviews to pick discs that work better.

..

For m-disc, LG is pretty much the cheap drive that's compatible. Else, some Pioneers support m-disc.

...

For ripping..... Any drive works for legal ripping of unprotected non-commercial discs.

Lg for the ps3/4, 4k bluray, etc.

Makemkv has a list of compatible 4k uhd drives you'll want to use.

...for heavy ripping, expect the blue laser to give out, so $50~ LGs are commonly used.

Last year someone posted a VHS/DVD combo player, and all hell broke loose.

The price is back to $270 now [walmart.com]
Panasonic ez47, Toshiba, rtc. are viable options, too. CHEAPER ebay.
Ez47 tend to have better digital noise reduction in the vhs side, etc.
Magnavox only worth the price of you're going for the hdd digital recorder decks for reputable ota recordings in a stand alone.

The post just says "without software" so I'm a bit confused at what software is needed
Videohelp.com
Software section for lots of freeware.
You don't need to pay to write, read, rip, play commercial blurays, etc.

Makemkv, dvdfab, leawo - bluray player and ripper. See makemkv forums to start.

Vlc plays unencrypted video files and discs (non commercial). If you add decoders, it can play encrypted/protected commercial movie discs straight without ripping (e.g. https://www.videolan.org/develope...vdcss.html). But since leawo etc give you a free player that plays everything.... Only for the geeks...
