Keep in mind that if you have a 12th gen Intel, you won't be able to use this to play standard or 4K Blu-ray movies on your PC because Intel removed some required HDCP security thing from their newest chips (citing that the HDCP handshake protocol is a security vulnerability).

DRM and HDCP? What madman allows such trash on their PC?
I feel like this drive is already failing on me after just reading 2 discs. Can anyone recommend better quality one?
Historically LG drives have been very very reliable but you can try your hand at LiteOn, Plextor, or ASUS are the other players. If indeed yours is actually failing I'd say it's a fluke and just needs exchanged but up to you.

It may actually be the disks. It seems it is not at all tolerant to minor scratches. I am also getting a maximum of 5.7x (24.5MB/s) reading speeds. That sounds about right?

If 4K UHD discs yes that's what I was getting with this drive, haven't tried just a blu-ray disc yet.
Hey, I could use some advice. I just got the drive today. Installed it in the desktop Win 10 Pro. It shows up. But when I try to downgrade following the YouTube video, I get a CheckSum error. Says: "CheckSum Mismatched. Drive will go to BOOT mode. Please retry again." Then I get a Windows prompt saying that the flash tool may not have installed correctly. I'm sure I'm picking the right Bios file. Any thoughts?
If u go down a little bit there is "Marty's SDF GUI". Click on it (2nd link in that section). It's like an updated tool. U use that and update to the WH16NS60 that would cover the WH14NS40 and WH16NS40. When I unzipped the source file that has everything the 1.02MK was like at the bottom or near bottom. Like 15-20 seconds flash done. I did 3 successfully and waiting on my 4th drive.
Yeah I know I'm prodigal. But I figured it's been 4-5 years and there was a period when there was no sale so now I'm just prepared. And I work too much (by force) so buying stuff online makes me feel good.
this is funny, i decided to look into what my drive is and see if this is an upgrade, and **i bought the exact same drive, from newegg, in 2012 for $55 with a 10 pack of BDRs thrown in for free**
it still works, granted i barely used it. so good deal i guesss

Thanks man. It was nice of you to go through the trouble. Yeah, I figured that out with some help from their forum. You need the SDFtool and the WH16NS60 1.02MK firmware. And since these drives come with encrypted firmware, you also need to check the "enc" box on the SDFtool. After that, it's as smooth as butter.
I don't use a burner for 4k. 90GB per movie is just way too much storage space on hard drives. 20-30GB per Bluray is bad enough. I just purchase the 4k Film with the Digital Code. The trouble now is finding a movie to purchase.

$50~
But because these are expensive now with the covid shipping crisis, you can use an external usb to sata adapter
https://www.newegg.com/startech-u...6812400542
$17~
Just noticed this and wanted to say thank you.
