1200 or so for a 9 channel receiver. This product doesn't make sense. 600 or even a 1000 in speakers and then spending 1200 on a receiver is absolutely backwards. The majority of your home theater sound budget should be spent on speakers. The greatest factor in your sound.

Well, technically it only requires a 9.1 unit, as there's only 1 subwoofer...

Edit: Please add Costco to the title, as you have to pay for a Costco membership to be eligible for this deal...

EDIT^* just realized these are nearly 2x the height of the previous version satellites. That's a pass for me.

I had a full size klipsch RP 5.2.2 setup in my large living room a few years back. We decided to move our TV location to a much smaller room, where those speakers were waaayy to big. I purchased the non-atmos version of this (but kept one of my SVS subs to pair with it). Was a downgrade for sure. But was a good compromise in terms of size and space savings.

I'm interested in these surrounds as I have an ideal ceiling for the up firing atoms layout. Anyone have experience with these yet vs traditional down firing atmos?
No matter how good your speaker placement is, the ceiling speakers will almost always sound better than the reflective speakers.

Hopefully this isn't a double post, the previous one seemed to disappear. How does this kind of setup compare to a sonos arc in terms of sound quality?

Thanks

up-firing is just a difficult setup. You're relying on angles and the reflectiveness of your ceiling to sound. Which is often the exact opposite of what people do. Most individuals actually look to stop sound from bouncing w/ acoustic panel placement (ceiling is one of the core locations). Down firing removes all these hurdles.. Logically people have to think about what's going on.. you're firing speakers on the floor and upwards to give the feeling the sound is coming from above your head. To do that the sound has to bounce off the ceiling and continue it's path. Most people have drywall on their ceilings which is not the most reflective material for sound. .

I think this issue falls on the receiver manufacturers. They all decided to draw the line at 7 surround/atmos channels. 7.2 or 5.2.2 receivers can be had for like $300, but the cheapest 9.2 or 5.2.4, even without pre outs, would top $1000. This might make sense when only the high end home theaters had Atmos, but none at all when Atmos gets cheap, especially when Dolby/speaker manufacturers are really pushing these Atmos enabled speakers.
I'm sure the shift to soundbars has made receivers less of a priority. My $300 Atmos sound bar in my bedroom sounds pretty awesome even when compared to my $3500 Def Techs in my living room.

I have tried a bunch of different soundbars from mid to high end with Atmos etc. None of them come close to a decent speaker set around the same price. Soundbars sound way too tiny to me.

Thanks, I'm a bit confused how the Dolby Atmos on this works with only 5 speakers? I should probably YouTube it to see. Was wondering if this is worth it compared to their reference towers or something like that Jamo set that's always on sale
I recently upgraded to the Jamo set from the original 5.1 Klipsch cinema reference (these should be about the same) and IMO the Jamo's are better but the klipsch are still really good. Don't have Atmos so I can't comment on that.

Well the probably is the shortages in production of 9.2 receivers. With limited availability the price is sky high now. the Denon x3600h was $799 and the Denon x3700 was something like $899, now its around $1500.

My buddy got an Onkyo RZ630 9.2 receiver only 3 years ago for $399 before the pandemic blew up. I was also able to buy a Denon x4500 for under $700 back then.

Hopefully when production ramps back up the prices will drop again.

apples and oranges here, but my 18" 1000W RMS 2000W+ peak sub for my HT laughs at this cute lil' system. I know, I know, cool story bro, no one cares, go away. I just can't help it as I love this avs stuff.

The quality of your speakers and placement of them play a big role on how good the performance will be.

With these enabled modules it can be a challenge in the average home.

Even with the overhead layout, in the average home it's not easy to follow those placements.

That is why they have these alternatives, so people have choices.

All things being properly placed, overhead is the best performance.

Another thing to consider. Would buying a new 9.1(2) receiver at a premium be worth whatever the results would be.

I'm not sure it would be with this quality of speakers.

IMO you are better off concentrating on building a good/better 5.1.

Here are how the two layouts should look like:

downfiring ceiling speakers are best

height speakers pointed at main listening position is second best

upfiring Atmos speakers are 3rd best

I started with upfiring speakers and didn't like it. Now I use height speakers for Atmos and it works well.

Time for the "compare this to my Pioneer Andrew Jones 5.1.2 atmos system" post.
Andrew Jones is now VP of engineering for ELAC. Definitely check them out if you're a fan of his. They are my second favorite speaker company after SVS

Having just recently looked into this, it is somewhat absurd the price cliff right now going from a 7 channel to 9 channel receiver.

Basic question: can someone dumb down what the "4" is for in 5.1.4 for me? I know it's "5" speakers, (left, right, center, surround left, surround right) "1" subwoofer....but what's the rest? I thought if if was a 2 (5.1.2) then it meant there were also 2 ceiling speakers, but this is only a 6 piece set. Can someone clarify? Thank you!

So basically the front left and right and the rear surrounds left and right speakers have another speaker built in them.
Those built in speakers are the (4) in the end of 5.1.(4).
They are designed to point up to the ceiling and reflect the sound off of it to simulate the "Atmos" sound.
