This is with bestbuy, so no bill credit involved, it's instant trade in value that deducts from the sale price, and tax is on the deducted selling price too. Don't mislead others.

ATT is $100 cheaper further. $500 for mini and $600 for regular. But trade in values are horrible.

T-Mo is still the best in value overall.

An update: I went to a BestBuy store this noon and completed the purchase with the trade-in without any issue. If the online ordering system didn't show the trade-in credit at the checkout page, just go to a local store and it's fast and easy.
And I did notice that BestBuy's store inventory information is accurate online (at least for the one I went to).
I also encountered the online issue of trade credit not applying to new phone in the shopping cart.

Went into the store, and they were able to adjust everything to have the cost and credit.

Summary:
Head into the store if you are encountering issues processing online transaction to checkout for trade-in credit. The store can do the same process.

I'm curious if trade-in deals will be this generous again, avoiding stupid bill credits. I can say that there was incentive to get folks onto 5G phones while TMo had the enormous advantage in mid-band 5G. This deal has been advantageous to many because the integration between TMo and Best Buy is so weak - you don't have to be on a "Max" plan to upgrade, the upgrade works over and over again, scanning the SIM at Best Buy has NO effect on the phone number attached to the upgrade. Party for many at TMobile's expense!
You summed it up perfectly! Laughed out loud reading the last line!!

What's the easiest way to handle transferring data when upgrading at Best Buy? I saw the recommendation that I clear my data on the trade-in before going to the store.

For my specific situation, I'm taking an iPhone 11 to upgrade to an iPhone 13.

With my last upgrade, which was at a t-mobile store and not at Best Buy, I first received the new phone from my carrier and I only handed over the trade-in after I had removed the SIM card, transferred the data, and did a factory reset.

Cool! Did you purchase eBay unlock right after you put the sim card? or should I wait a day or so?...
I waited a few hours just to be sure, but purchased the service same day but it was a Sunday so I think processing the unlock started the next day anyways. I suggest you can wait 4 hours after activating with verizon sim and then order it. That should be fine.

When ordering, probably there is an option nearing the checkout to include data transfer, which is free. If not, Bestbuy rep can charge you $40 and the transfer is usually slow. Or, you can backup in iCloud, pay $0.99/2.99 for extra storage if needed, restore from iCloud to new phone.

Does it have to be first time?

Also would Total Wireless SIM work?
iPhone will locked to the carrier of first sim inserted so has to be first time. Total Wireless works but phone will be locked to Total Wireless. If you want to unlock for any carrier, better to try a suggestion/instructions provided somewhere here with AT&T to check if they can unlock before you try any sim on it. If not, then best option is to use Verizon sim at first and then buy unlock service on ebay which is pretty cheap for Verizon and phone will be unlocked after.

If you are adding a line, yes. This deal is best if not adding any line, just upgrading with a trade in.

Most people f the stores should be fine with a used iPhone as long as there are no cracks and the IMEI is clean. Few stores where I saw the rep examining my iPhone 12 and rejecting the trade-in because there were minor scratches on the screen 😲🤯

For me they just looked at the screen and that was it. However my phone was in very good condition no scratches or screen shattered. However it's screen speaker was defected with xing sound and also battery was bad due to 2.5 year use.

Some stores tho charge full taxes versus online they only charge taxes on portion after trade in credits. When I had to change a phone due to I wasn't able to unlock with Att trick, they exchanged a phone but I would need to buy it again and they process in store and charged me full taxes. Some people are reported that stores charge full taxes.
