It's not a valid question, rather, an incomplete question. 8GB is plenty for many use cases provided you are occasionally willing to close programs. In other cases, 16GB is not enough.

The conundrum is that much of the services are now asynchronous (runs in the background) and it takes 4GB just to keep Windows 11 running from startup.

The real question is whether a Windows laptop will operate well in 2-3 years on 8GB as more background services are coded into the OS.
Minimum 16GB ram needed in 2022, if you run virtual machines for work and study. This would be a killer deal even at $999 if it had 16GB ram.
Yeah, it's 5 better.

It is a valid question. Knowing how many services (and lines of code) ms pushes to run on clients, I'd say 16gb is a minimum requirement these days.

Personally I use minimum 32gb ram for laptops these days, and would want minimum 16gb for tablet/mobile systems. I wouldn't invest close to $1,000 for an 8gb system

Does this include keyboard etc? Is it overkill for an older non tech savvy parent? I want good hardware quality and enough power that it won't break or need replacing anytime soon
Do you need Windows? Or just for basic tasks? I'd suggest this if you don't need a Windows machine: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/leno...Id=6477625

If you're set on this device, I'd jump. Definitely a good price and doubt we'll see lower until Black Friday'ish. Aka long time.

I think this is a better analysis. Don't spend this much on an 8GB system that can't be upgraded. Either get something way cheaper to hold you over or buy the 16GB upfront.

I myself bought the i5/8/256 just for the experience knowing that I will sell it within a year.

It says keyboard sold separately in the post. It's annoying because a Surface Pro is handicapped without a keyboard. That said, it is indeed a bit overkill. It's essentially a midrange laptop squeezed into a tablet. I have the Surface Pro 4, and I still haven't found the need to upgrade. It does everything that I need it to, and does it well. In my opinion, it's the best bang-for-buck laptop you can get right now

I've been on the fence to get one but everyone I know that has one loves it. I think I'm going to take the plunge and get it!

I have the Surface Pro 7 i7 and I love it. This one is better in just about every way from the reviews I've seen.

I don't think spending this amount for an 8gb - 128gb machine in 2022 is a good investment.

What about waiting for this year's refresh? I heard the improvements for the 12th gen is pretty good so I'm wondering if I should wait instead?

The improvements for 12th gen have placed Intel ahead of AMD this year. It's not an incremental change, it is a leapfrog from what we had available from both Intel/AMD...

The gains will also be far more significant on mobile than on desktop, with the efficiency cores increasing battery life.

What about waiting? Well.. for the past 5 years or so, waiting for the "next gen" was kind of a stupid game because the next model was only a refresh of the same processor and we had to wait at least 2 generations to see worthy improvements, 11th gen was a complete disaster on desktop computers.

But for 12th gen, this.. this is worth the wait, for the first time in 5 years, waiting is worth it...

Now you and I may get downvoted for souring the current deal, it's not available yet and we don't know the price bla bla bla, so I'd say I'm just addressing your question, nobody should take offense on facts, with the premise being that this right here is a good deal and if you need a Surface Pro right now, this right here is an excellent option.

Is it fall 2022 for surface pro 9 or whatever they'll call it?

16GB seems to be the sweet spot today. I upgraded my 9 year old laptops about 7 years ago and put in 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.

But this is the base model (no i3 available) and if you want 16GB of RAM it is $$$$$.

So the real question is, what will you do with it?

Do you want to spend the $$$ to get something so slick?

I do love the idea of the surface tablets but I just find it to expensive to get what you want 16GB and 1TB.
