unfortunately, not the energy monitoring ones
Correct, but these are still great products. I find the Kasa app to be extremely easy to use and intuitive.
What's Tasmota? I sense a cool hack i hadn't heard of.

EDIT: Wow, just read up on it. couple questions:

1. Once flashing Tasmota firmware, does the device still function with the intended service, i.e. it can still work as intended with Alexa, Google Assistant, etc and that all this does is just bypass cloud integration if you choose to?

2. What items should I keep an eye out for here in SD that are Tasmota compatible? What have you found here?

Thanks!

handy for the holiday lights, christmas tree and much more..
thanks OP.

I have it with my water boiler on schedule before I wake up and turns on/off via geolocation. Basically all my IoT is on geolocation so no phantom drains from my TV unit or home office when I'm away.

Does anyone find these Kasa plugs and also lights witches to be very sensitive to what wifi channel they re on? I. E. If I put them on the "prime" channels they seem to stay connected - if I set it to i.e. 8 it constantly disconnects. Don't have this issue with other brands. Also switched routers in the meantime (both Asus) so I assume it's not that.
I don't know which country you're in but in the US, you should only use channel 1 or 6 or 11 for WiFi.

You can run a server called Home Assistant that serves as a bridge between a wide set of devices (Tasmota being one of them) and ecosystems. It is a bit of a learning curve but fascinating for tinkerers and those that don't want stuff to be in the cloud that doesn't need to be.

https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/

Tasmota offers a dizzying array of features in the device itself. My favorite is support for two SSIDs and the ability to periodically look at the signal strengths and switch from one to the other for better performance or reliability or whatever.

And you can look for devices that can be flashed with Tasmota at https://templates.blakadder.com/search.html

Ideally you want to start with devices that can be "Tasmotized" over the air though I've now acquired the tools to do so over a wired serial interface. Or you can buy from a limited portfolio of devices already running Tasmota from

What do you (or others) use for geolocation? I have always used our phones as "presence sensors" with SmartThings (using WebCore), but recently it has been flaky and not reporting changes as it should. I think it may be related to the app because every time I open it after it didn't report properly, it immediately prompts to agree to an updated terms of service (which I've done a dozen times)...

I have. RPi4 with HomeBridge running so HomeKit runs my location automations. I was using Alexa/Google Home "Presence Sensing" too but I prefer HomeKit's automation for the "Turn off after (time duration)" and my garage door (Alexa and Google home couldn't use these doors as triggers unless they've corrected it lately)
