Walmart and Kmart were head-to-head competitors. They offered incredibly similar products, had similar retail footprints (for a time), and paid the same wages. Eventually, Walmart shut down Kmart. It essentially came down to organizational excellence. Walmart had it and Kmart did not.
Frankly, it's no different than Amazon. They eat every other online retailer's lunch primarily due to the operational effectiveness. They have leveraged that advantage over the years so that they can now expand into new market segments. They can be wildly successful while offering the best prices on the products that matter the most.
