There are some of my favorite smart plugs, they have energy monitoring and you can also set settings so that they will turn off after a certain period of time at below a certain wattage threshold. For instance my 3d printer uses about 15-20 watts just sitting idle, when printing it's much higher. I have a 25watt threshold where the smart plug turns off after 15 minutes at 25 watts or below, so when a print is done it cuts the power, it's a trivial amount of money for that power, but it's useful nevertheless. It's also useful for monitoring power usage of certain appliances or otherwise. For this price it's tempting to add some more.

Spend a bit more and get these: https://a.co/d/cXs0h0G

Once you use Matter, it's hard to go back.

Not only is it stupidly fast, but being local means you don't lose access if your internet goes down.

Read the reviews about these plugs are not portable and cannot be resold later.

What?

Why would you resell them?

If I don't need them anymore later on, like selling any other tech stuff. Why can't they be resold? That's a red flag right there for me.

When do you envision selling a smart plug?

The average relay will last longer than your lifetime and Matter is a forward compatible protocol.

As long as the capacitors don't go out and 2.4Ghz WiFi doesn't become obsolete, you could get 20 years of use out of it.

At $6 each, I'm not sure I understand your logic.

Actually I don't understand your logic. What's wrong with re-selling something that I no longer need at a later date? That would be my prerogative, just like selling a used keyboard or phone cable that are still functioning. You just confirmed that it could never be resold for some unexplained reason.

Further research and reading the reviews on Amazon revealed that this company make customers accept unconscionable data and privacy policies with no opt-out options. I just cancelled my two orders from Amazon for the plugs and outlets.

Not sure why anyone would defend anything anti-consumer out of sheer principle lol. Strange that they can't be resold if that's actually true, (can't see why not though).

I have a crap ton of EM Kasa plugs, but have not used a lot of them anymore after purchasing a PDU with switching/EM capabilities for my rack. I'd switch over to these Tapos or the Matter ones, but I know they won't get used at the moment.

How exactly is the fact that it will likely outlive you "confirming" anything... besides maybe your finite existence?

Sorry, was that a spoiler for you?

My point is that your weird scenario where you would even need to sell a smart plug is ridiculous, given how cheap they are and how long they last.

I'm not even sure where you got the idea that they can't be "resold". There's nothing stopping you from moving a Matter device to a new WiFi network after factory resetting it.

If you actually did your research, you'd know that these never have to connect to the internet if you don't want them to. That's the whole point of Matter.

And based on this brief interaction, I shudder thinking about you selling a used keyboard.

Yes they can be resold. These devices aren't tied to anyone. You can just reset them and use them anywhere. I've given away several used ones after overbuying wall outlets, and my friends have had zero issues setting these up on their own accounts. Not sure where you got this info from, but it's definitely not true.
