the one thing about ultra short throw is that they are ideally projected on a perfectly flat surface. Any waves in your screen or wall or sheet or whatever your projecting on will be very magnified because of the extreme angle of incident. In my opinion, ultra short throws work best with fixed projection screens, a smooth flat wall, or possibly a drop screen that is tab tensioned and not inexpensive pulldown screens or a fabric sheet or wavy sheetrock/plaster even wall texture could be trouble.
I have a 77" OLED and a 120" UST.

No one cares about the OLED after they see the projector.

Any recommendations on a ALR screen to pair with this projector? I'm prob looking at 100". Also trying to decide between UST or 77" OLED.

The PX1-Pro is much newer (just came out recently) and has better tech. It has triple lasers (compared to one), HDMI eARC, built in Atmos speakers, WiSA ready to add wifi speakers and surrounds, much better input lag (around 30ms). It's also almost $3500.

Thanks, by referring to the previous comments, I realized the tri-chroma is px1's key feature. I am waiting for my room to be cleaned up and buy a px1 this year.

This or a 77 inch OLED for my basement? I am ok with spending upto $3000 and can get zero ambient lighting in the basement and have a whole empty wall that i can use to project stuff. Please help.

I want good blacks because literally every movie and TV show has a lot of dark scenes.
To me, it depends on the size of the basement. I went with a 77" OLED in my upstairs living room and a 120" projector in my theater room in the basement. My wife and I wanted something different downstairs. You can't deny the picture quality of the OLED, but watching a movie on a 120" screen with a proper sound system just feels good.

IMO, unless you have specific needs, a 77" OLED is going to be easier to setup with better picture quality. Gaming is also less than ideal with a projector generally.

A UST makes a lot of sense when you have very limited mounting options, but a lot of space (to take advantage of a bigger screen). I use a UST specifically because my living room has no logical walls (too many oddly placed windows) for a decently sized TV for the space.

The 120" screen is great, but if PQ is important in what I'm watching, I'll watch it on a 55" OLED.

Projectors are such a fad. The TVs and the sizes have caught up with 86" going for around $1500 with 120HZ and good quality. The TVs also come with a good warranty and last longer with less hassle. It's so easy to get them to work with HDMI 2.1 and all other latest stuff. They also work in varied light environments. They also do a good job at upscaling non-4k content videos.

Overall, I tried a 4k UST projector and felt it's not worth the money compared to say 86" TV worth around $1500.
Calling the primary method that films have been consumed since the invention of moving pictures a fad is definitely a choice.

I don't even necessarily disagree with your overarching point because for the overwhelming majority of consumers, a projector is simply not a logical decision. They don't have a dedicated theater room so they have too much ambient light, they do not watch high enough quality source material to really tell the difference and the entry cost for doing a projector "right" is much higher than just getting a really nice LED TV. For 99% of people, something like the Sony X900/950 series at 85" is all you could ever need.

That said, once you invest in a good dedicated theater room, a good projector and a good fixed screen, you will never look at a LED/OLED TV the same. The entry cost for doing it right is far higher, but the resulting experience is miles better.

💯 Exactly. I have a 110" on a epson 5040ub and people have the same reaction.
Do you have issues with DV or HDR content? I was watching the first Matrix on 4K HDR HBO MAX and it was too dark. Same with Hawkeye on Disney+. Its only HDR stuff and not all (DV stuff seems to perform the worst) , just some where the projector looks terrible and I switch to my Sony TV.

Any feedback on how you are using this, fully controlled dark room or how much ambient light? Did you compare with Epson 5050UB or other similar projectors?

If you have some shades it will look amazing in a super bright room it won't look that good, you don't need full darkness

Currently going back and forth between the Hisense L9G and an LG OLED 83" either the C1 or at the rate I am going the C2....I don't think the 97" will be in my price range.

Have had this a few months now and thought I'd chime in on the common questions that I had myself.

TLDR: I would recommend at this price

Image quality has marginal increases. Going from white wall (watchable to start tbh) to screen to smoothed white wall with projector paint to alr screen all have marginal increases. I watched with the projector over an outlet for 2 weeks before my screen order came in and you can clearly see the outlet but if you're projecting ~130" you can blend it into the background. Similarly speckles on the wall make the image slightly grainy but you completely get used to that, but once upgraded going back feels bad but livable tbh. Black levels are good for what it is but not true black obviously, but not a deal breaker at all to me or anyone I've shown it to. Sound gets very loud and is much better than alot of TVs and sound bars (although I don't know if that is saying much), but can still use an upgrade.

I'll say the best way to put it is it's kind of like a recipe. You can have buns and a patty for a burger. Then you can add cheese. Then lettuce. Then tomato. Then ketchup. Then mustard. Then grilled onions. Etc etc. The more you add the more you get and the more you'll pay. Missing something is a deal breaker for some but not others. I'll say if you haven't experienced top notch stuff in a lot of these areas then you'll love this as all of it will be an upgrade.

Also in this case watching on a wall to start is a good option to see where you want to allocate money for upgrades next (light control, screen, audio, etc). Or you may find you don't like it and return it. For me at my entire wall of 130-140" with light controlled room the size brightness and color are a great experience.

The one con I'll say is UST is "plug and play" without ceiling mounts or anything but it requires ~2 feet of space away from the wall because measurements of distance away are from the back of the device and

Blacks on any projector wont get remotely close to the OLED. Also, ambient light isn't just about light coming in from a window or fixture. If your walls are white, light from the projector screen will reflect off walls, back onto the screen, greying out the blacks. You'd need dark, preferrably flat black walls for an ideal picture. These short throws are also more meant to be a tv substitute, sacrificing black levels for brightness. If immersion is what you want, projector is the way to go. If it's blacks, projectors aint it. The lack of true blacks bothers me a little on my projector, but I'd def choose my projector over TV when watching movies.

Same but maybe with the Hisense PX1. I've decided if I'm staying 100" or under for the projector, I'll go with the OLED. Otherwise if I'm going 120" I'm going projector. I have a 55" and 65" OLED in the main living. Picture Q is great but it doesn't give you that same immersion feeling as a huge projection. Such a hard first-world-problem decision.
