Gaming wise maybe not too much difference between 5600x and 12609k especially 2k+ resolution. However in the productivity applications, 12600k is 38% faster than the 5600X in threaded work, and 7% faster than the Ryzen 7 5800X, per tests published by tomahardware. Performance are not the same

Your DDR4 3200 RAM will be supported on 12th gen, assuming you dont buy a DDR5 board.

Z690 is the only chipset that does CPU overclocking, but there isnt that much overclocking room, so its a bonus and not needed. It the premium and most expensive, its better than AMD's x570. Boards tend to be $200+

H670 has the same premium features as Z690 but no overclocking, not many of these motherboards exist right now.

B660 is what most people recommend you buy, no CPU overclocking but affordable $130ish boards that will work well for most users.

H610 is the very budget chipset, no RAM overclocking, so max 3200Mhz supported, basic features, boards tend to be $100

Thanks for the helpful posts in this thread. I used to be pretty into building my own PCs but haven't done so in about 10 years so am pretty out of touch. Still using my computer from 10 years ago but it's starting to bluescreen more frequently so figure it's time.

Does anyone have any build guides they can recommend?

I built a rig with this cpu, an Asus TUF z-690 D4 WiFi, 32GB of G.Skill 3600Mhz CL16 RAM, Asus 3070, MSI Spatium 1TB etc etc and I am VERY impressed with the performance. I guess I've been out of the game too long but I have always built my systems with the i5 line of CPUs and almost always spend roughly an equal amount on the motherboard; since my pentium II 350mhz (which I guess would be an equivalent of the i5 back then now that I think about it with the 450mhz being the i7 perhaps??!!) I have used Asus, and have ran all of my computers for 7+ years without a hitch. Maybe that just isn't common practice anymore to buy a $250-300 motherboard; who knows, anyways, I'm not sure why so many people are whining about the z690 pricing, seems par for the course for me, an extra $100 plus or minus when building a whole computer really isn't much. Good luck guys, this is a great CPU!

Just built a computer with this chip and an Asus Tuf Gaming B660 plus ($180). Been great so far and your memory should work fine.
Same! Used the Noctua NH-U12S Redux. Amazing.

I noticed nobody is in here shouting at people to get the competitors chip. Only Intel fanboys do that
The irony of you doing exactly that with the thinnest veil trying to cover it up

If you have to do a return with Newegg, be prepared for a major headache. Definitely check out Gamers' Nexus latest video regarding Newegg before deciding if you want to be a customer of theirs.

Got this with this with a Vetroo V5 CPU Air Cooler from Amazon. Best bang for the buck cooler. LGA 1700 bracket in the box already. Paired with the Asus tuff gaming B660. Solid PC

On that note Microcenter has the 5600x for $239 at the moment, in most use cases the 5600x and 12600K are about the same in performance. The 5600x uses like half the power though which is ridiculous.

What good is a cheap CPU when the motherboard AND especially the DDR5 RAM will bankrupt you?

I guess you can hobble the CPU with DDR4 RAM making it a lot more reasonable.

Do any knowledgeable people have suggestions of which MB and cooler using DDR4?

DDR5 doesn't provide much of a benefit in most tests. Just use your old DDR4. You're not "hobbling" anything.

An H670 based board is probably the best price/performance. You give up CPU overclocking, but there isn't much OC headroom anymore anyway.

I have an MSI Pro Z690A board which is one of the cheapest Z690 boards out there. No frills, but it works.

Yeah DDR5 is expensive compared to DDR4 but some retailers have it instock Samsung/Patriot DDR5 is $74.95 for 8gb stick.

MSI PRO Z690-A is a very solid cheaper Z690 option. The Z690 Tomahawk and Edge DDR4 are good options if you have a bit higher budget.

Yeah, I bought the 12600k at $229 but now have buyers remorse because they had the 12700k for $299 that same day and my cheap-assness came out and I didn't end up getting the i7…. 😂

I guess for gaming it doesn't really matter much, I had the 4670k since 2014 and it was fine until just recently so I'll be fine with the 12600k for a few years I'm sure!
