Within the US, TextNow's SIM card -- when used with their Free Nationwide Talk & Text plan -- simply provides limited cellular data to allow TextNow's app to be used (in the US) when you're not within WiFi range.

Even within the US, if you take out TextNow's SIM card and just use WiFi, your current TextNow services would still work as they do today. Your current TextNow also still works if you sign in to the same TextNow account on other compatible devices connected using WiFi or cellular data.

Outside the US, you will need to either use WiFi or provide cellular data, swapping your international SIM card in for TextNow's if your device only has a single SIM card slot, to continue using TextNow as you've had been.

if you are going to use voice/txt over data, then why not Google Voice ?

FYI, you don't need this if you have any phone with data. Just download the app for the same thing.

If you don't have cellular service or wifi, how will this service work?

The $0.99 item from Textnow is a sim. Along with the sim, you would need to install the ad-supported Textnow app onto your cell phone. Calls and texts are routed through the app.

On Android, you could first use your regular dialer to enter the called number. The textnow app would next take over and make the call. Doing this does not eliminate ads as they are displayed at the end of the call

Texting has to be written, sent and received through the textnow app.

Textnow is VOIP, so it uses cellular data. Calling and texting data is permitted to pass-through. Regular data through the browser or any other app does not work. Only exception is reaching google.com and performing a simple search. Tapping on any result fails as only staying within the search page results of google is permitted.

You can also use Google Assistant, either voice or typed, which can give more information than a Google search.

300/1000/100 each month, no cost. When buckets run out they no longer work, but can be topped up. I'm using it to test phones for SIMLock and cell functions, it's native TMo MVNO, no apps required.
is this a walmart/freedompop specific plan? don' t see it in freedompop.com (they only have 10/10/25 and you have to manually renew every month, no auto renew option)

Is that with SIM or without SIM ? And with SIM, does it work just like regular SIM card in phone or have to use theor app only?

They shipped me the SIM for free (Tello); it is used just as a normal phone; she has unlimited calls and texts and 0 data (which is exactly what I wanted.)
I bought it off of Stacksocial I believe.

Off topic. I still got a LG Volt from Virgin Mobile. How do I get it unlocked? Never used it on Virgin Mobile.

Did you try editing the APN settings for Textnow?
https://help.textnow.com/hc/en-us...device.%20

If that fails, try these settings instead:
https://www.apnsettings.org/us/textnow/

With Sprint winding down, all their phones will be worthless for cellular service unless the device is unlocked. AT&T though is implementing a whitelist which limits allowed phones to mostly AT&T-branded devices. T-Mobile is not as strict but still requires VoLTE.

Because Textnow is voip-based, they will probably be the only mainstream option for unlocked LTE (but without VoLTE) Android and Iphone devices that have nowhere else to go for cell service because of the AT&T and T-Mobile restrictions of phones allowed onto their system.

For my kid's TikTok 3 watch, I use RedPocket.
It's $30 for a year with 200 minutes a month
