True... but they could also use the devices as staging grounds to attack other things in your home network. Your best bet is to segment any "smart" devices from the rest of your stuff.

Kasa has the best light switches. DO NOT use their cameras as they don't have MFA nor do they send an email saying a new login has occurred on your account. I'm ok with a hacker switching my lights on/off but logging into my cameras

Too bad there isn't just a standalone motion sensor that you can put anywhere and use to trigger other kasa switches.
You can use ring motion sensors with Alexa to trigger actions. If you have Echo plus you can use cheap ZigBee motion sensors (from Alibaba or whatever) to trigger any Alexa-friendly switches.

I use their regular light switch to control my ceiling fan, works perfect!
Yes, the regular switches work for on/off fans but there's no speed control. Patiently waiting for a proper fan control switch.

Wow thanks! I have a ring alarm and didn't realize I could use the Alexa app to make a Ring motion sensor trigger a Kasa switch.

I I thought the only way to interface the 2 together was through IFTTT. But that didn't work because I couldn't see the individual Ring sensors.

I posted this on the Kasa smart switch 3 pack front page deal… thought it could be helpful here as well:

I've bought into the KASA ecosphere pretty heavily, and unfortunately it seems to be true that TP-LINK is phasing out Kasa. All signs point to them expanding their TAPO line and killing Kasa. I've stopped buying their products until TP-LINK starts being more transparent with their plans for the Kasa brand.

At CES last year, TP-link announced plans to get Kasa to work with Apple HomeKit. They've since announced they've cancelled that, and brought ZERO new products to CES 2022 under the Kasa banner… only TAPO branded devices.

The theory is that Kasa markdowns will be more frequent in US to sell off inventory before making the brand announcement here.

There are reports of manufacturers/retailers getting notices of "discontinued without replacement" on Kasa products.

Apparently some companies are banding together to develop industry standards for IOT/smart home type devices. Should help prevent future issues with folks rewiring their whole house just to find that their new smart devices may not be supported in just a few days/weeks/months/years (who knows, since they're being so hush hush).

Can check out 'Matter' movement towards standards here.

Lots of big companies backing the effort. Interestingly (perhaps ironically?) TP-Link is on the list of backers

Although not a KASA, I bought 4 of these on Amazon on sale (2 for $50) and they work great for fans. There are only 4 speeds, but it is all I really need. Initially, one of the units would lose connection with WIFI every 5 minutes and after multiple resets, I contacted the company and they shipped out a replacement the next day. They never even required me to send the defective unit back, although I am not using it as it is not smart without a WIFI connection. They may be on sale elsewhere if you want to search.

This gives me an idea to get a motion sensor for my bathrooms to trigger my Kasa light switch. Turning off would still need to be manual.

I use kasa dimmer to control fan and its speed. I actually have two next to each other, one for fan itself and other for its light (fan has light as well)

How do you segment?

Pick up a cheap Managed switch and VLAN the Smart devices to their own wifi network.

edit: Another option is to use the Guest network on your Router.

Does this work with HomeKit?
If not, any similar alternatives?

I have Kasa smart plugs and they definitely are a little funky. It took me awhile to figure out but when reset, they flash between two light colors at two different speeds. The slower one doesn't work, but the faster one does. You have to hold down the button longer to get that state. Stupid engineering. But works well after setting up.

Once they have intruded that much, lights are not the only things they would turn on or off.
