the 'wii version' is an entirely different albeit very similar game. the 'nes version' are entirely different games. you didn't grow up with the nes version, you grew up with the nes games.

so your jump press just gets eaten and you don't jump, then the game unfreezes and you just run into the pit.
it's completely insane and coming from a company like nintendo who normally seem pretty good with this stuff, it's just mind boggling that someone at the company would not only implement that, but that nobody else there would've said 'this is awful lets fix it'.

2D Mario has been more or less the same game with better graphics and new sprites since 1985, except the US version of Super Mario Bros 2, which was a skinned version of a non-Mario game. This goes for handheld and home console. A fun "example" of this are the Mario Maker games and the ability to reskin it on the fly. I say this as a Mario fan since NES and someone that would be happy with a new 2D Mario game released annually. I own all 2D and 3D Mario games in some form and in some cases, multiple forms.
