Are the 3rd party capsules any cheaper that you are aware of? I took the risk and ordered the machine.
That being said, I thinks the confusion comes from them focusing a lot more on the newer Vertuo line. This is all due to the huge number of "generic" (aka non-Nespresso branded) made options for the "original" line of machines. Whereas the Vertuo uses propriety technology that prevents "generic" pods from being used (at least for the most part).
But I made some Petes after that... and wow, I'm pretty damn impressed for a $70 machine.

I bought a 10 pods pack of the Starbucks Espresso Roast pods along with the machine, and Best Buy sent me a case of 50 pods instead LOL. I've also got some other Starbucks pods from HomeGoods ($5.99 per 10 pods) and Peet's, Nespresso, and Cafe La Llave all marked down from Amazon, combined with the Discover $10 off $50 promo. A grand total of $76 for 220 pods, about 3.5 months supply considering you really need 2 pods per 1 drink daily at minimum. Not a bad start but it's already costing more than what the machine's worth for essentially ~3.5 12oz bags of ground coffee, and this was with a rare ~$40 discount and Best Buy screwup... The mark up is real for the convenience factor! I find the coffee quality to be comparable to moka pot brews with supermarket grounds, except you can always use fresh beans with the moka pot for an even better result.
I'm a Nespresso newbie but I did a lot of research before getting into this ecosystem. Here's what I've learned through reading and experimenting. It's the least I could do to give back for scoring this deal:
1. This machine's two dose settings are actually calibrated for William Sonoma pods. Single dose at 30ml dispensed into the cup, and 50ml for double. Nespresso's standard for Ristretto is 25ml, and 40ml for Espresso. Since all non-Lungo Nespresso pods only contain ~5g of grounds, it's ideal to stick to the Single shot to best mimic a real espresso machine's ~1:2 brewing ratio standard. Any more water and it'll lead to severe overextraction, so the Lungo volume is definitely out of the question.
2. To recalibrate the volumes dispensed by the machine to Nespresso standards, you'll need a small scale (0.1g precision or better) and a cup small enough to fit under the dispensing nozzle (remove the drip tray). Insert a pod. Hold the Single shot button until 4ml before the desired amount (so 21ml). Your new dosage is now saved, repeat for the Double shot button if desired to 36ml. Personally I only use the Double shot button to rinse the machine.
3. Always start your machine with a blank shot (chamber closed, no pod inserted) to warm up the machine before your brew, then another blank shot after your brew to rinse out the brewing chamber for better tasting coffee.
4. Try the pre-infusion method for a stronger and IMO tastier shot. Press the Single shot button, listen carefully for a distinctive quiet pop, which is when the foil seal of the pod is pierced, then immediately press the Single shot button again. The brew has been stopped, a little bit of coffee might have came out but it's okay. Wait 10 seconds. Press the Single shot button again and let it brew as normal. You should see extra crema (not real crema like from an espresso machine, but it's visually pleasing) and get a stronger resulting shot.
5. Use filtered water if available. Impurities in the water can affect the taste of your coffee. The minerals are important though, so don't use reverse osmosis or distilled water. Descaling is important too. Do it once every ~6 months depending on your water's hardness level. Nespresso recommends descaling after 600 pods.
Hope this was helpful for you and any other lurker reading.
