I actually own this set (the previous version) and have had it for years. I also happen to own a 3/8" Matco Eight8 flex head ratchet with the locking flex head, so I can give you a direct comparison. The 3/8 Matco and GW are almost exactly the same and I, too, thought the locking flex option on the Matco would be really useful... reality is that I almost never use it. Both the Matco and GW (as I recall) use a tight ball detent against machined "ribbing." The tension on the flex head is tight enough that you don't really need to lock either ratchet.

Btw, I love the fact that the Matco is American made, but at $172 for one 3/8 ratchet... Matco pricing has gotten just absurd.

These are not torque wrenches. Start with YouTube tutorials. Chrisfix is good

I've had HD not want to break up a set to replace a single wrench, but if you bring in the whole set, they'll gladly swap the whole thing out.

Dumb but true

Can the head be locked in place? It doesn't look like it. And while this design is nice in certain circumstances without being able to lock it for me personally it ends up being more of an annoyance.

Looks like a good deal though if this is what you are looking for.

Thumbs up on the deal, as a four piece set of quality flex ratchets for under $100 is pretty good.

However, I have to agree that if the flex doesn't lock, I don't really want to use it. Unfortunately, locking flex adds a bit of cost:. 3-piece for $125 [amazon.com]

Always keep my eye on this tool after missed the SD deal ($69) a few years ago.

Bought a 90T version from HD for $119 (now $134) [homedepot.com] two weeks ago.

I love it, I did replacement some jobs, time belt, camshaft seal, engine mount.

The 1/2" ratchet is huge, perfect for heavy stuff such as front engine mount bolts.

Does anyone know the difference between 80T and 90T besides the tooth count?

Agreed ! I bought a few locking flex head from Snap On as well. I notice over time i prefer the one without locking head where i can get the angle just right when i work in tight area. Actually I find locking head quite annoying when i try to dial in the angle during a job. It definitely slow me down when i want to finish off a job.. For the price for this set, definitely not bad at all for a home mechanic or even someone who's in the trade as a mechanic as well.. FYI, my Snap ON and Matco truck warranty my GW when i need replacement which makes it even better

Thanks. I have local stores that sell Gearwrench: HD, Tractor Supply. I didn't know they would warranty.

For me, the problem with non-locking flex is that the places where I need to be using a flex head are often also places where I can't get an ideal push/pull direction on the ratchet - thus some amount of the force applied ends up being in the direction of the flex and, as someone said above, it could end up being a knuckle buster.

While it takes a bit longer to set and lock the flex, I prefer that over the convenience of the non-locking versions.

Local swaps can be YMMV depending on the store, whether they have an individual piece in stock, and some may have the expectation that you bought it there or require a receipt. I haven't broken many of my Gearwrench tools, but those that I have were replaced by the tool truck guys.

90T should have slightly less than the 4.3 degree swing on the 80T

Guess i should have just looked at the 90T first… it is 4.0 deg swing arc vs 4.3 on the 80T

Thank you for the post, seems like a great deal at first glance and I wanted to jump on it. However, most of the positive Amazon reviews of the new version tool are from "Vine Voice free samples", and lots of bad reviews come from real customers who had to buy the product which ended up being defective out of the box, or broke very quickly with minimal use...both new and old version. The total amount of negative feedback is just too great for this to just be a 1-off issue or fluke and isn't worth the risk even with that much of a discount, in my opinion.
