For a long time now I have purchased unlocked phones. Mainly to avoid Verizon's bloatware. But with a chip in my screen Samsung will only give me $100 for my Note 8. What are the opinions on unlocked vs locked?

Strange. I selected S7 - 32GB and answered No for "Device in good Condition" and No for "Is the screen functioning correctly and intact, free of any chips, bruised or dead pixels, and burn-in?" and I still get estimated value of $800 even though the market value is $17.50. Will I get screwed? Should I cancel?

Estimated trade-in value
$800
Market value: $17.50
Requires eligible unlimited plan (speed restrictions apply) and trade-in. Other terms apply. See offer details

These "deals" do not make any sense. You can buy the phone unlocked directly from samsung.com. Charge the purchase to a credit card that offers no interest financing for 12-months (or 18 if you have a really good card). You can pay for wireless service on a pre-paid plan from AT&T (they have a $300 upfront annual payment for 8GB of data per month). With tax that averages to about $25-$27 a month for your phone service. Over the course of three years you actually save yourself about $800 buying it unlocked (and you save even more if you DO have a phone to trade-in with Samsung).

I really hate that carriers went to 36 month payments. We used to give Canada crap when their carriers had 3 year contracts... but I get it, Im still using my S10+ (its the longest I have had a phone for in my life). Just sucks that I risk losing that money if I want a new phone (on payments) or want to change carriers in the next 3 years. A lot can happen in 3 years.

Also just went down to the basement and grabbed my S II and S II Skyrocket that I will be trading in to get my wife and I new S22's. Wife always complains that I'm a tech hoarder, well it just saved me $1,600...
Time to trade in my SII Skyrocket that bricked on me in 2015 for an S22 Ultra...

Huh? your math isn't making sense? You can get a used note for $75, now you're basically paying zero extra for a brand new phone. I will take $75 over $800 any day! also samsung is by far THE WORST for trade ins. even if there is a smudge the phone is rejected as salvage only. pre-paid plans do not work for people with large families.

let's face it all carriers will rob you blind and best time to get a phone is at launch. worst comes to worst after one year you switch carriers that will buy out your contract.

Not a great deal. You would pay $30 more per month over going with Verizon prepaid. Locked in for 36 months that's $1080 more you would pay over 3 years so your basically giving your phone to them for free and paying an extra $280 for the privilege.
