Triband important if you are using these in a wireless mesh.

Better to have a wired back haul anyway.

This is a great router with dual WAN (1Gbps and 2.5Gpbs) ports. The signal strength is pretty good if you don't need a mesh. This price has appeared a few times recently. I paid a little more than that a year ago. Note that this is an AX5700 in 2 bands. So the throughput in each band is likely higher than a triband with a similar total bandwidth.

The Hydra got pretty Ok rating from Dongknows. In case someone doesn't know he is THE best reviewer of routers. Just Google the name.

Replaced my Netgear ac2600 which was aging gracefully never any problems. The signal strength is comparable. My question with ax routers. I don't see a private ax band to connect too, does the ax generate on the the 2.4 and 5 bands? My iPhone 13 has ax card in it and there is no way to know if I'm even connected. Was I mistaken thinking it was a separate band just for ax? (Yes it is enabled in the router settings)

I got mine last week and immediately flashed it to Merlin-WRT. I upgraded from a 68U that's been running Merlin.

This 86U is really fast and as pointed out above, triband routers are a bandaid for those who need a mesh setup without a wired back haul.

You can order it in store even if online only, and use the 15% off at time of order. Their POS system is pretty well designed to handle online only items as if they are in store.

Stack with an old piece of network gear for 15% off and you might have a front page deal.

Being a cheapskate, I'll probably stick with my trusty ol' Tmo conversion AC68U Smilie

Did going from AC68U to AX86U significantly improve speed and range for older AC devices? I still have no AX stuff and the around 200 Mbps I get from the AC68U to somewhat distant 5 GHz AC devices is plenty for streaming. Switching from 5 GHz channel 36 to 157 (chosen by "Auto") brought my somewhat distant test location speed from ~150 Mbps to 200 Mbps without buying a new router.

It's temping to get one to play with, but there's also the crippling SD cheapness that says to just download the podcast before you go out of range, which is a free solution.

Yes you were mistaken the wifi 6 or AX advantage is on both the 2.4 and 5ghz bands but for the fastest speeds you want your devices on the 5ghz. So no there is no separate band, a separate band will be with wifi 6E, which this router does not have.

The best prosumer router one can have today and Merlin's firmware is cherry on the cake. Fast, Rock Solid, Runs Cool, Good Signal, Good Security Features, Frequent FW updates/security patches and looks awesome in two tone colors.

If you're spending $250 on a router, I'd strongly consider the Linksys Hydra 6E for a little more on ebay. That 6GHz band is going to come in handy in any urban or suburban environment.
